An Illinois Lawmaker wants all Bullets/ammo bought in the State of Illinois to be stamped with a serial number!

State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, believes that serial numbers would help track bullets and help police identify those who are illegally distributing ammunition.

"We're not trying to get rid of responsible gun owners guns, we just want to know how the guns and the bullets are getting into the hands of our youth and causing senseless harm and murder," Harper said.

Harper was joined on Tuesday by several state lawmakers, Chicago aldermen and others in support of the proposal.

Harper said she hopes to file the bill later this week.

Absolutely Absurd!

If they ever passed that, you Illinois shooters could say goodbye to all the national online ammo sellers. I doubt any of them are willing to set aside an "Illinois Room" just to keep a wide variety of Chicago-approved ammo on hand.

While Chicago's level of violence is a disgrace to our nation and being able to further trace an act of violence back to the source has theoretical merit, it ain't gonna work. At the very least, it would put an unnecessary burden on every law abiding gun owner to account for every expended piece of brass from range sessions to prevent them from being picked up and scattered elsewhere. And it will not put a halt to burglaries, straw purchases, etc. There are too many causes of the problems Chicago is experiencing, and guns are not the root of them.

A good lesson on how gun control laws do not work is Chicago. It has strict laws on firearms and has had over 400 murders in the first 6 months of the year.

If that were to happen (which it won't), Ammo companies wouldn't comply. It would be way too expensive to retool just for one state. Essentially, no ammo would ever be sold in IL again.

Second, the people (thugs included) would buy it elsewhere, i.e. out of state.

Third, RELOAD!

MD spent millions on a "ballistic fingerprinting" scheme for years that didn't solve a single case.

Just 'cause there's no chance in hell it'll work don't mean they won't sell it.

This is what happens when your elected officials are "progressive" idiots.

This measure will surely crack down on gang violence and no criminal will ever be shot in the commission of a forcible felony again, so those BLM kids can stop making a ruckus.

The devil is in the details.

Unless they specify that each manufacturer have a unique serial on each bullet (which would require very large bullets or very small numbers, given the millions of bullets produced that would be sold in IL), manufacturers just need to stamp "a" serial number on each bullet.

I like "0" as it's more symmetrical than "1", but I also believe in leaving manufacturers some choice in the matter.

Well, if the perpetrator used a revolver, kind of puts the whole proposal into the dumper...."Man, I just shot a dude, and emptied out my brass on the scene...what was I thinking?"

I think they're talking about the projectiles not the brass

Absolutely! All they have to do is go next door to buy ammo.

I also believe the number would be on the bullet, not the case. This is an absolutely INSANE idea.

They can't even control guns in Chicago because they can't control criminals. It's absolutely ludicrous that these morons believe they can keep controlling everything and expect different results.

It sounds like they are following California's lead: pass stupid laws that require technology that doesn't exist so manufacturers don't have anything to sell you anymore.
