Truth is stranger than fiction; what an extreme act of bravery!
Thanks for sharing this story of a true hero.

I saw the story of Sgt Norman Cyril Jackson on TV the other night and it is an incredible story to say the least. I had never heard of a crew member crawling/walking onto a bomber wing to try and put out a fire in mid-flight. Enjoy!

One I suggest also looking up is Captain Richard Wallace Annand of the Durham Light Infantry. What he did by himself on the river Dyle--was Audie Murphy-like.

Or try Sgt. Jose M. Lopez of Texas for his heroism one day during the Bulge counter-offensive in Dec. 44. Awarded MOH.

It was either FM Montgomery or Air Marshal Sir Arthur Harris, I forget which, who said of the Victoria Cross, a close cousin to our Medal of Honor, that it was awarded for an action that one could not sanely (or is it 'reasonably'?) order anyone to perform...I think walking on the wing while in flight to perform a repair qualifies under that definition.

OMG!!! I remember reading about that when it happened ('43-44?). I think he kicked holes in the fabric of the wing to provide footholds, as he worked his way out to the burning engine. He had to leave his parachute in the fuselage, as he couldn't get it through the access to the wing.
