I Purchased my .40 Shield in April, 2013. It was test fired in March 2013. The first trip out to the range I had put 100 Rounds of Blazer 165GR and 20 rounds of Hornady CD. I had one failure to feed with the CD. I went to the range several times since then and fed it 300 rounds of Winchester white-box 165GR and 40 rounds of CD with no failures. Fast forward to November 2013 I take it to the range and feed it 100 Rounds Remington 180GR FMJ and 20 rounds of Barnes TAC-XPD Two failure to feeds with the Remington and two failures to feed with the Barnes. All the failures in the Nov range trip were with the 7 round extended Magazine and no failures with the 6 Round Magazine. Any words of wisdom? Contact S&W? I'm reluctant to carry it and just carry my Bodyguard .380 now. I field strip and clean n lube after every outing. I love my shield, really bummed!

So i guess it is perfect with the 6 round mag? Use that one for carry. Try different ammo to find a reliable one for the 7 rounder if possible. Funny you should say that because although I have fired about 300 or more rounds through the 6 round mag, I have forgot to bring along the 7 round mag every time I've shot my Shield. So my 7 round mag is unfired so far.

This is just a thought, but with my Shield 9mm, both magazines use the exact same spring. It's possible your 7 round mag has a weak spring. The additional weight of the 180gr rounds is just enough to cause a misfeed. A couple of things to try. First, swap the the springs in the two mags and see if it still malfunctions. Second, try some lighter ammo. 155 or 165gr. Or, you could try stretching the spring in the 7 round mag, but that is just a temporary fix.

Call S&W and explain what's happening with the extended mag. They might send you a replacement. The best remedy is to get some extra power mag springs. (+5%) I haven't seen any available yet, but with the number of Shields in circulation, it probably won't be long before Wolff starts making them.

many others on here have had the same issue as you. try searching it and see if any of the threads had a fix. i remember seeing people talking about it on here but didnt bother to follow along.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will try a search. I have been lurking here for several months and it seems like there are great peeps here.

Try loading the mag up and letting it sit for several days at a time in between range trips. The mag springs are inherently strong on these mags and need breaking in...most people have to use a mag loader for this reason...springs will loosen up and should work fine
