Shield 9mm...used

Got a chance to pick-up a 'slightly' used (less than 50 rounds, claimed) Shield 9mm tomorrow...and will probably grab it?

Guy is down to $200 (with box and everything) as he wants to purchased another pistol...and, from my research, that's a decent price.

Any suggestions regarding ammo for the 9mm Shield...what it likes...what it doesn't like, etc.

My personal preference in 9mm is CorBon 115 grain JHP's...

I also like Hornady's 115 grain JHP FTX's...

Both are a bit hotter than normal...but I prefer that 'pop' when I shoot as I grew up on .357 magnum revolvers and I'm comfortable with the 'pop' when I shoot.

Will he let you shoot it first ? Need to look at supposed problems with the Sheild. I find it hard to believe anyone would buy a new gun only shoot 50 rounds then sell it at such a lose if there was not a problem. I would suggest meet at a gun range to make the sell.

Good price. Go for it. My Shield eats about anything I give it. I've settled on using these.

For range ammo 115 gr fmj have run Blazer Brass , Herters , PMC , Federal , all good had one bobble with a BB wouldn't chamber was slightly out of spec . Also JHP Speer and Critical Defense and Sig no issues . Bought but have not shot Federal 124 HST JHP .

For most of us, the second rebate was goodies. But the second rebate was $75 for "residents of Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York."

The Rebate for mags/ammo & Junk loader ended Sept 31! It was the reason I bought the 2.0 and 1 1/2 later the Shield, figured the mags/ammo for 2.0 worth about $100. and the Shield mags/ammo about $85-$90.

Mine too eats about everything 115 ball. Winchester Whitebox cheap Federal from Wal-mart, fiocchi, PPU and Freedom Munitions. Over 1000 rounds thru mine, had one stovepipe with the dirty federal, and one FTF with the WWB. Chocking both of those up to the cheap ammo. No problems at all with the Freedom, I've shot 25 Federal HST 124's and 75 HST 147s. I carry the 147s. Should shoot 200 more of those to be sure. I shoot mostly steel plates at our club's rural outdoor range at 7-12 yards. When I go 6 for 6 on plates, I turn to the side and take a 70 yard shot at a torso-sized plate. The Shield is better hitting that then my "wife's" RM380.

My first trip to the range with my Shield I took all the partial boxes of 9mm I had laying around, ranging from Win White Box to some odd-ball 25 year old stuff from a custom loader in Maine to left over issue Federal 115 gr. HP that had to be over 30 years old to Barnes +P HP. 0 issues.

It is now loaded with Sig V-Crown 124 gr. JHPs.

Reasonable accuracy at 7 Yards. This is the 2nd 100 rounds that day.



And since we've started comparing the Shield to the RM380, here's the 2nd 100 from one of those a month before.



The Shield clearly has the edge and also did not raise a blister on my trigger finger as the Remington did. I'd consider $200 a good price. Some people are just fickle when it comes to guns, but I'd try to talk him into a range session, too.

The Shield is my EDC. When I bought it (new), the slide was difficult to rack and the magazine springs very powerful. I followed advice from the forums and left the slide locked back a few days and the magazines loaded with snap caps. From then, everything has been fine with mine.

My Shield 9 doesn't like Federal HST 147, failure to feed about 10% of the ammo. The hollow point gets hung up on the feed ramp. But no problem with any other ammo.

Any advice on a solution is appreciated.

My personal preference in 9mm is CorBon 115 grain JHP's...

I worked for Barnes Bullets, so I carry their TAC-X loading of their all-copper expanding 9mm 115 grn hollow point.

Corbon used to load the same bullet, just faster.

However, because the bullet is long for its weight (copper=less dense than lead), it is difficult to load in the relatively short 9mm case. It has to be set deep enough to meet Overall Length (OAL) requirements, but that actually reduces powder capacity compared to lead bullet loading.

To get 1250 FPS with a copper bullet, few powders are available. I suspect that such a hot loading will produce more recoil and flash. I also suspect that FPS claim.

The patent on the Barnes' design expired. I believe Corbon has replaced their former Barnes-supplied bullet with a slightly changed all-copper bullet of their own design. It probably performs very well.

However, I know the Barnes products. They are loaded with low flash powder and are incredibly reliable and consistent. Others, such as Black Hills and Asym also have excellent loads using the Barnes XPD all-copper bullets.

For personal defense all of these loads based on the Barnes design will serve you well. Many modern lead based bonded bullets perform very well also at less cost. I still choose to shoot the Barnes TAC-X 9mm 115 grn.

I don't understand this. Can you explain what you mean by "pop" please? How does it make you shoot better?

Your best chance of finding the "pop" you like with 9mm target ammo is with Winchester NATO 124g FMJ. It is loaded to almost +P level, and provides a noticeable extra kick (if that's what you're referring to) over standard ammo. And it's accurate. The last bunch of NATO I shot resulted in my best shooting ever at 15 yards with my Shield (5000 total rounds). Best of all, it's affordable. It's not hard to find online for $10-11 per 50.
