Shield loading round ahead of extractor

Have a strange Shield 1.0 problem. When firing the pistol will occasionally strip a round from the magazine ahead of the extractor. The slide will push the round into the chamber ahead of the extractor and the slide stops about 1/16 inch out of battery. Unlike a 1911 the extractor will not pop over the rim.

To clear the jam I have to drop the still loaded magazine, lock the slide back, and easily and push the chambered, but not fired, cartridge out with a small stick. It does this about every 50 rounds out so.

I've measured the ammo against HST and Critical Defense with no dimension difference. It often happens on the next to the last round in the magazine. The extractor seems fine. The pistol has about 2500 rounds on it and a new recoil spring about 500 rounds ago.

I'm guessing that it is a problem with the magazine spring / follower. The mags are hard to load and the followers seem to jam up a little at the top when the spring hits the taper. I replaced all my mag springs with Wolff extra power but they made no difference. All mags are S&W.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Not sure what to do next.
Thanks

What ammo is it? Are they reloads? Have you tried other ammo? Does this happen with all of your mags?

I've not experienced this but my Shield 1.0 has only about 600 rounds through it.

My full-size 1.0 had about 1500 rounds before I swapped the slide out for a 5" ported core slide. I detailed stripped the 4.25" and found quite a bit of gunk under the extractor. It wasn't causing a problem but I felt it would eventually.

If you have the tools and inclination to do so, you might remove the extractor, clean it all out and check the extractor and spring.

I also routinely clean my mags and check the followers for any gouges.

Why is it my spidey sense goes into overdrive whenever a malfunction post comes up and the OP does not name the ammo? ;)

Extractor shape would be my first look. Is there a burr or crud in the extractor slot the cartridge rim has to slide under. Wouldn't hurt to pull the extractor and make sure everything is reasonably polished and not hanging up in the channel the extractor has to swing in. The extractor spring and its tunnel could then be checked for boogers obstructing extractor movement. If the extractor doesn't freely return to the closed position the rim might be bouncing off the breach face, getting ahead of the extractor hook. The breach face might be rough, not letting the cartridge head slide up and under the hook.

Thanks for the replies. The ammo is blazer brass 115 and PPU 115. Both are from 1000 round packs and have fired perfectly in my M&9, Glock 17, Glock 19, my other Shield 1.0 and my Kahr PM9. Both loads chrono at 1135 or so average from a 4" pistol. I've tried 2 seven round magazines with the same result.

I looked at the extractor and it appears fine. I suspect the magazine follower is hanging up when the spring pushes it into the magazine taper. It is probably slanting somehow allowing the top round to move forward and get ahead of the extractor. I'll call S&W tomorrow and see if they have any advice. Right now my thoughts are to change the extractor and try an Ed Brown magazine.

I see you have two Shields. Does the issue occur with the mags from the other Shield? If so, you could try swapping slides or recoil spring assemblies. That should narrow it down a bit.

It makes me nervous to think of poking a live round out of the chamber with a stick. Why is the round sticking?
I was trained to point the gun in a safe direction and hit the back of the slide hard with the palm of my off hand to put the gun in battery and fire. I've had 2 or 3 out of battery incidents happen at re-qualifications over the years, but to your post,I second LVSteve's post.
