USMC policy on personal weapons of ANY kind changed back in late 87-early 88 when a Marine in a BEQ across the grinder from mine was playing with his personal 357 Magnum in the BEQ when it went off killing one of his roommates. Within 24 hours all BEQ's, base housing, personal vehicles were searched for weapons and ammunition. One SNCO told us "the only weapon you rate are the ones we issue you".Something else I wonder about...how did he have a personal firearm on base? Is that allowed now? I recall my son got in deep trouble at Camp Lejeune over one single 30-06 round. He returned to his room after a weekend deer hunt and inadvertently forgot one round in his pocket. It was discovered and he was in deep trouble...back to Private he went, but that's the Marine Corps. Is it just the Army that has lax security?
I had to check my Kabar into the armory and could only draw it out when I went to the field. I was searched for my pocket knife (a stainless Camillus Boy Scout knife) but I stuck it in my boot and it was missed.
I would assume it has only gotten worse...
There is a significant and open problem with discipline within today's military and that will cost us dearly when the time comes. It can be corrected, but it means returning to a lot of old and not-so-politically-correct ways. If I had acted toward my superiors the way I've seen occur these days I would've lost more than my rank!
