I've never been to a gun show that had a ND. I have experienced several at various Walmart stores though.

Hearing Dave1918a2's story about the "plant" loading the gun on his table makes me wonder if this situation might have been something similar....
Somehow a round got into one of his Scout rifles at a presentation he was giving. Somebody after the presentation came up to meet the Col., picked up the rifle, and sent a round through the ceiling. There are a couple other stories about the Col. shooting his water or electric meter, and also touching one off in the den with a buddy after an evening of sipping. None come with links to actual news stories other than firearms blogs, although the rifle one was fairly well publicized at the time, as I recall . . .

The only Jeff Cooper ND I happen to have heard about was his TV, and he said he was aiming at it. In my house, he could have claimed self defense, and that would have been the end of it. Could have; now I don't own a functioning TV.
