shooting mat weights

I shoot PPC and had a nice shooting mat made for the 50 yd shots.

However its made of fabric sewn together and its light weight constantly blows away with the normal gusty TX winds.

Someone suggested having the ends separated and sew velcro on the openings and find some large heavy flat washers to weigh it down.

Before I make an attempt to modify my nice mat (expensive)....

Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations so I get it right the first time.

I generally put my box on the front left side and then fold mine in two after shooting the 50 yard phase,it doesnt blow away ,unless really windy and when I leave it open on hot days the canvas gets HOT for prone. I went to the heavier plastic bottom mat because of rain , as long as it stays 1/2 " or less no problem. The washer thing sounds like a good idea,sometimes in seated the mat blow up against you and rocks you if really windy. I know at Albuquerque,most guys just went to no mat because its so windy some days there. Take care Bob

I use pieces of indoor-outdoor carpet for kneeling and prone mats on the range. The extra padding helps on our rocky surfaces and the weight usually keeps them flat. On a day like today, hitting 50 mph, well.........

I'm afraid of putting metal weights in a mat because it might result in injury when the wind does pick it up; sort of like tying a brick to a cow's tail when you're milking, sounds good until you try it and the brick hits you in the head.

I also use my shooting box at the front left corner but at some ranges I look for good sized rocks. Really windy conditions I'll leave my mat in the truck. I used to have a vinyl backed mat but it was a bugger to dry after shooting in the rain so I went with a denim back on my second mat, the denim one is considerably lighter.
