Specifically short barrels (under 3") effects on the ballistics of a 45 acp revolver. Opinions? Factoids?

I dunno

This thread already needs a picture.

Sorry I don't have the answer to the question you've asked...just have the gun.

Maybe some eXpErTs will pitch in some FACTS...or oPiNiOnS.

I will not call myself an expert, I can tell you what I've researched and seen.

Short Barrels affect any caliber, particularly the smaller ones that depend on velocity to achieve results. That said there are two types of ammo that appear to work well in the SB .45, the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo and the various varieties of the Barnes Copper rounds. Cor-Bon, Doubletap etc load the Barnes rounds.

It should be said FMJ .45 has killed a lot of people on multiple Continents, so even limited expansion still leaves the .45 ACP a potent round.

Just like most any other gun.
Lower muzzle velocity, bigger muzzle blast. Reduced recoil from lower muzzle velocity may be offset by lower weight of gun.

With the old standard 5g Bullseye under a 230g FMJ, a 5" barrel would give you 850 fps, a 3" barrel would give you 740 fps, with a 185g HP and 5.7g Bullseye, a 5" barrel would give you 1000 fps, a 3" would give you 860 fps.

OPINION:If I had a gun like the one above, I'd be perfectly happy with a 3" barrel :)

You'll certainly lose some velocity, but I think the cartridge is still effective from a short barrel. Like they say, a 9mm might expand, but a .45 will never get smaller than .45. :D
