So, I was browsing at a gun store today and noticed there were two lengths of 10-round mags for the 15-22 rifle, a short one and another that looked as if it might have held 25 rounds. But they were both 10-rounders. Any reason to pick one over the other? I was thinking the "longy" 10-rounder might be easily convertible to a 25-rounder...is that a realistic possibility?

I prefer the short 10-rounder for shooting from the bench. I don't see the point of buying the long version. If you want a 25-rounder, just buy it. If you are looking to skirt your state or local laws, think twice.

What uscav8r said. 10 round short is better.

Agreed. Shoot mine mostly from a bench using a bipod. Long magazines didn't work well with it. Ended up buying two short magazines. Rarely use the 25 rd magazines that came with it.

Agree with everyone above... If 25 rounders are legal in your state, why mess with buying a 10 rounder and trying to convert? Buy the short 10 rounder for shooting from the bench or prone, and buy the 25 rounder for shooting longer strings between reloads.

You sound like a guy who like myself are trapped behind enemy line in the People's Republic of Commiefornia.
I use the shorties for shooting from the bench and the long ones when I'm shooting while standing.
I like the long ones because it's easier to pull them out with my crippled hand.

The longies have a pin in the follower guide channel. It prevents the follower from being removed and S&W doesn't put a loading assist button on it.

The pin is easily removed and the mag becomes a 25 rounder without a loading assist button. Buttons are available online or you can take one off of one of your shorties. OR... just use a golf tee as an assist.

Do NOT do this in Kalifornistan. It was legal for a week but now it's illegal again. Check your state & local laws.

For me; my personal philosophy is:

30 rd mags are for TEOTWAWKI

20 rd mags are for when the SHTF

10rd magazines just about covers everything else in Penn's Woods.

FWIW I like a 20 or even a 10 round magazine as primary if I'm carrying in a vehicle..... a Ruger factory 10 round magazine in a Mini-14 makes for a very low profile SHTF long gun...... back up with 20 rounders. 10 round AR Magpul mags are also available

I like the short 10 rd magazine for just about everything..... I do have a few 25rd mags for when the Zombies show up..... but other than that 10 shots do me fine..... mag dumps are not my thing, full auto is suppressive fire IMHO.... but a 10 rounds allows one to practice 3 to 5 double and/or triple taps......and much better from prone and/or the bench....not to mention training involving exiting a vehicle.

I have 10, 25 and 50rd. The 10 gets used the most. The only thing that the 10 rd. in the longer mag is for the "cool" factor look.

Here in the People's Republic of (spit) california, I am hoping we will get back our standard capacity mags after the 9th circus cort hears the case on appeal.
