worked great when cleaning i noticed a crack in the sleeve/spacer on the front of the cylinder. this is the cylinder part that pushes against then crane maybe sets the cylinder head space? It this exstension/flange/sleeve is cracked but not all the way through but seems not to bother anything have no way to take a picture right now phone is broken.
not to worry keep and eye on it or back to S+W is used gun not brand new, thanks

L-frames have great balance, and are very accurate "workhorses".

I believe you are referring to the gas ring. A pressed in collar whose sole purpose is to help prohibit hot gasses and shooting debris from getting into the cylinder cavity which houses the yoke barrel.
This particular part does not play a role in determining proper headspace.

thanks you are right I looked at it on other smiths and its like a dust sleeve or just to keep out debris. I watched the midway video on end shake and it looks like the shims go inside so you are right. That's good thought I bought a problem. If it got smashed is it replaceable?
