I have a Rossi single shot 20 gauge shotgun.

Was wondering if anyone had any experience with barrel inserts that allow you to shoot center fire rounds?

Seems like it would be nice to be able to shoot something like 38/357 -- or even 32 S&W Long or 32 H&R from the long gun.

How well do these inserts work? What about extraction?

Any suggestions as to brands and lengths of inserts?

Dave

If the insert is only 3-5" long, then you are essentially shooting a handgun with a true 4" barrel but with an extra 20" of empty tube.

No rifling, no increase in pressure. The bullet will be traveling down the last 20" of the barrel not touching anything.

The much longer sight picture MIGHT help, assuming you can figure out where to hold the sights.

If you view this as a $49 way to get a handgun you don't own, then yes it is a good idea.

You will have to hand pick each empty shell from the adapter. The guns ejector will push the ADAPTER out each time just like it would an empty 20 gauge shell.

Years ago a friend had a barrel insert for a 12 gauge that was about twenty inches long and chambered in 38/55 Winchester. I have a couple of Savage four/tenner barrel inserts somewhere that I haven't used in years. I've never seen an insert for a pistol caliber but then I've never seen Australia either.

There is a company in Montana that builds inserts as you describe. I have several of his. Cartridge adaptors for shotguns or rifles were quite common years ago. I have quite a few in my collection. The problem I have encountered in the early Montana brand inserts was they weren't rifled. About half of the bullets key holed at 25 yards. I hear these inserts are now rifled. I have another brand of 12 gauge x 22lr insert that is rifled and gives good accuracy. EBAY is a good source.

Short lane is the Montana manufacturer.

Have a pair of Savage "four-tenners", and one of those *** aluminum chamber 12 gauge x 38 Special chamber adapters. I also have a 22 RF full length adapter for my 50 Cal muzzle loader. It shoots as well as my target 22's I have seen Drillings with chamber adapters for 22 Hornet or 22 High Power and some medium bore rounds too. My 22 adapter was $150 before they were discontinued. The European deals are several times that! Ivan

I have some Short Lane adapters as well as some made by some other company. Bushcraft types and survivalists like them. Dace Canterbury was a fan of them. I have not used mine.

I have used similar rifled inserts to turn flare pistols into single shot handguns. These seem to work.
