Shotgun Red Dot

I like the circle dot sites much better than plain dot sites on handguns or rifles, but I’ve never tried anything but a bead on a shotgun. I’ve never really seen the need for one.

I put a Holosun 507C on my Mossy 940JM Pro. You can toggle between a dot, a wider circle, or both. I usually leave it on the circle when shooting clays.

Took a bit of getting used to, but now that I’ve used it a bit, I love it. Very rapid sight picture acquisition.

Only downsides I can think of are the cost and the slim possibility that it fails at a crucial moment. If you can still see your front sight through the lens, then I suppose that’s not as critical. My 940 is just a range toy so I’m not concerned.

I’d suggest, since your 590 is optics ready and you seem intrigued, go for it! Worst case scenario is you don’t like it, then you can either sell the sight or put it on something else.

Trijicon MRO all day long. Used on multiple platforms and they take a beating…

IMHO a handgun red dot is a great addition to a defensive shotgun. Handgun red dots are far less bulky than traditional red dot sights, quicker than irons and better in low light. Also good for slugs at longer distances. I used a Holoson 507 on my Beretta 1301. The irons are still usable through the Holosun, though I've yet to see one fail.

I put an old Tasco PDP4 with a 10 moa dot on my Kel Tec KSG. It works great and is sighted in for the buckshot load I use for defensive purposes, Having a sight is important as the Federal Flight Control ammo shoots a pretty tight group at typical home defense distances.

Just this past summer I finally found a Beretta A300 Tactical and mounted a Holosun HE507 Comp Green. (Green shows up better than red for me) You have the choice of multiple circle reticles, with or without a 2 in dot. The reticle choices are great for a shotgun. It has the Shake Awake feature to save the battery and several other desirable features. So far I have run about 250 rds of #4 & 00 buckshot and approximately 100 slugs through the gun and the sight has held up well. On the A300 the Holosun co-witnessed with the factory sights perfectly.

I run the Eotech and Holosun circle dot on carbines and a pistol. The concept has worked well for several students in the Defensive Shotgun Fundementals class at our range. Neither of mine are set up for optics, but that may change.

I would stick with quality name brand optics, as mentioned above. I've seen a couple of nib "brand x" examples fail in a day. (We tell students to bring 20 rounds of slugs, 20 of buckshot & 75 rounds of target loads.)

Off topic FYI: We also saw a brand new imported 870 clone fail. As the class was winding up, a student was shooting 1 oz slugs at a 75 yard steel silhouette. The lug seperated from the barrel. When he closed the action the barrel fell off on the ground. We did a round count. The gun had fired exactly 128 rounds. It appeared that the lug was "bonded" rather than welded to the barrel. GLUED!!!???

No problem with a RDS on a SG. Fast target acquisition & follow-up shots. Just figure out what type of RDS you want to go with. I put a Burris FFIII on my 870 only because I got it on sale for $140.00. It works just fine for me.

My Mossberg 590 was prepped by VangComp and I added a light, RDS, and a sling so it is similar to my BCM ARs. I find it worthwhile.
