Should dogs be allowed in restaurants?

Why not allow dogs? I have relatives that are worse than dogs in smell, manners, looks and health.

Although there are many dogs that are not behaved and some areas have health code restrictions preventing dogs in certain areas unless they are Service Dogs.

Dogs are allowed in restaurants in Europe, primarily in Germany. They come in on a leash, sit at the foot of their owner and no one cares are even knows they are there. I don't see a problem.
Edit: Notice the Swiss flags in the video.

My dog is better behaved than a lot of children I see in eating establishments, and probably cleaner than many patrons.

No. Because although some of you here and many others have great well behaved dogs, you can't screen every dog at the front door..so you will get dogs from bad owners that are smelly...or bark..or aren't housebroken....the exact reason we have the gun control debate...because a few spoil it for every else....

Absolutely.

I agree. My dog would behave better than many humans in a restaurant (and would not be wearing a baseball cap, but that's another issue...). But, when dealing with the general public, I think you would run into all sorts of animal issues with some people's pets. As much as I love dogs, it is just not a good idea.

It's amazing, to me, how people can become blind/oblivious to their dog's (and children's) obvious bad behavior. I do think that outdoor dining areas may be a little more conducive to allowing a dog to dine with you. I suppose it really should be left up to the restaurant owner to decide what is best for their business, as long as it's in line with the health codes.

I agree. I love dogs. But other than service dogs, all others should be left at home.

I get tired of people that bring their dogs "just because". These are the same people that let their dog sit in their lap while they drive or carry them around while they shop for groceries.

I understand that we have dogs that are a part of the family. To love them and let them love us. But some people get carried away and don't consider others when blinded for the feelings for their dog.

Some get so carried away that they are selfish and only think of themselves. Not the dog. Like those that leave their dog in the car while they shop or eat.

Sorry, but I don't buy it.

My local watering hole used to let my dog in and everybody loved him. Then some jerks one day decided to go home and get their dogs (untrained pittbulls) and ruined it for me.I thought the idiots should get barred for life, they didn't.I don't go there anymore because I don't want to have a run in with these fools.
Funny part is my dog could have kicked their buts one on one,He didn't even flinch when one lunged at him.
He flattened another one at the dog park one day and just held him down with the right amount of pressure to let it know that the fight could end when he wanted. When I pulled him off the pitt took off.I've never seen anything like it.He doesn't allow bullys at the park and usually sends them a message.I've seen him stop aggressive behavior with out so much as a growl.
I ain't saying he's a badarse but most dogs know not to mess around with him or his littler buddies.
He would never start a fight but from what I see he won't back down either.

In '88 during the Seoul Olympics, the gov't had the restaurants eliminate any refererence to canine food(not the kind in a bag or can), they didn't want to upset the westerners.

Seems a little odd to discuss an issue that's pretty much settled in most places, but since we're doing it . . .

I think that each restaurant should set its own standards, and see whether they can stay in business. I suspect that for most, that would mean no dogs. Myself, I have nothing against non-aggressive dogs, even those who go begging in a civilized manner. I'd be happy enough with a restaurant that enforces the same rules on dogs as they should on people. However, I'm reading here that some folks go to restaurants where the management doesn't handle people well, either.

We don't eat out much, anyway.
