How come some guns of the same model, dash , and barrel length have the S&W logo on different sides? Does it have to do with the stocks it wore originally? Specifically model 19-4. I’ve heard it could also have been if the gun was originally to be factory engraved they would use the small logo on the left side in order to provide a large open canvas on the right. Seems plausible I suppose. Any other verified reasons?

I know that some models and dash numbers have it on one side on earlier production and later on the other side. The 66-1 for example.

Yes. Combat Magnum ~ 19-3s that have the small trademark on the left side were intended for engraving or commemorative models (Texas Ranger).
19-4s are a little different in that there were a lot of commemorative models made during that change and then near the end, late 1981, there was a transition to the small, 'J-frame' trademark on the left which was followed by the barrel pin being deleted and then the -5 change deleting the recessed cylinder.
The small, 'J-frame' trademark on the 19-5 (& 66-1) was quickly replaced by a larger trademark on the left in 1982.

These are 19-4 one is a commemorative for the California Highway patrol.

Yeah, here’s a shot of my 1981 vintage 19-4 sporting the small logo. I later traded this in on a slightly nicer 19-3.
