I have a p239 in .40 S&W. I was thinking of purchasing a .357 Sig barrel and was wondering if the .40 S&W mags will work with this round flawlessly? I ask this because I don't really feel like purchasing mags at $40 a pop just to shoot 357 sig and I see that Sig sells mags specifically marked for 357 sig and 40. I know from the Glock I can use the same mag.

Any insight from you Sig guys into this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I own, carry and have been shooting the P239 for two decades now. I think the 357SIG and P239 were made for each other.

Your 40S&W magazines will work 100% with the 357 Sig cartridge.

All of mine are 357SIGs. I am not a 40S&W fan. but I do have several 40S&W magazines that were acquired in the very early days when 357SIG magazines were hard to come by.

If you like changing calibers, the P239 is the only firearm I am aware of that utilizes it's Factory original 9MM barrel instead of an aftermarket conversion style barrel. The one bonus to the 357SIG magazines is that the little ridge that supposedly keeps the projectile centered also allows the 357SIG magazines to 100% reliably feed 9MM ammunition. I have a 9MM factory threaded barrel for suppressor use.

As to magazines, Top Gun Supply has the LEO requested 8 round 357SIG magazines for $25. Like all Agency magazines they are phosphate coated for corrosion resistance as opposed to the blue commercial magazines. They are a tiny bit longer as you can see in these photos.

Colt_saa - thank you so much for that in-depth explanation and the info on the 8 round mags. I think am going to get that barrel. BTW nice collection of 239s - especially the one in nickel or SS (can't tell). Is that a factory finish or did you have it refinished?

Cheers!

colt_saa That is an awesome collection of Sig P239 pistols and an excellent explanation on the question the OP asked. I have a Sig P239 in 40 S&W and I have a 357 barrel for it also. I have both types of magazines and they both work no matter which barrel I have in it.

I need to get a .357 Sig barrel for mine. I'm a big fan of the cartridge, but have only one gun in the caliber. With an accessory barrel, then I'd have two....

There are two different firearms you might be referring to. This first one is a factory satin nickel. It was only available in 40S&W but has ne3ver fired a round in that caliber. I broke my rule of not overpaying to get a 357SIG by purchasing a 40S&W and then buying a 357SIG barrel for it because I liked the way it looked, also only 210 were manufactured as part of SIG Gun of the Month program. This is the April 2005 GOTM

This second P239 is finished in hard chrome. Bob Cogan at Accurate Plating and Weaponry did this for me 10 or 12 years ago. Bob's work is outstanding.

fyimo,
There was at least one run of 357SIG marked magazines that used the 40S&W body back some years ago. I am sure it was an accident.

Very interesting and educational thread. I also have a P239 that I bought new in '98. I ordered the gun in 40 S&W and shortly after receiving it, I bought the .357 Sig barrel and two .357 mags. I never thought to even try to interchange the mags since they are clearly marked .357 and 40 S&W.

I sure do like those Nill grips on your GOTM. I have some Hogue rosewoods on my P239 but have contemplated going Nill.

I have a P239 in 357sig and been thinking about getting a 9mm barrel for it. I asked on the Sig form if this would work and got mixed results. Some saying yes and some no. Anyone know for sure. I prefer the 357sig but have a lot of 9mm ammo and nothing to shoot it in plus 9mm is much cheaper to shoot.

Most of the folks that told you yes are people that know for sure. Most of the folks that told you no are people that never tried it.

Many of us have been using the Factory original 9MM barrels in the 357/40 firearms for 6 or 7 years now. We have tens of thousands of 9MM rounds down range between us over those years

Why not forget about Internet advice and buy a barrel and go try it for yourself. Worst case is you sell the barrel and have ended up spending extra time at the range. Best case is you learn that we were right :)

Both are very nice but I think am in love with the hard chrome :D
I actually think I may have my p220 finished in that.

Thanks again for the education! Just ordered the 357 sig barrel and will use my 40 S&W mags.

Cheers!

The pistol in the lower right corner was on display in the APW booth at the Shotgun News trade show in 1978. That is a Bob Cogan hard chrome job. I still own that pistol today. That is my first 45ACP DA/SA autoloader

Lower left? Did you mean lower right? One on the left looks blued.

Bob does good work and is quiet a character. ;)

Only have one gun that he worked on in the collection.

You can't see me,but the drool is running down my mouth looking at that hard chromed P220. ;) I never sent a gun out to be refinished, let me ask you a few questions.

1- did you ship it yourself and receive it back to you or do you need an FFL?
2- does Cogans remove all the parts for you and reinstall as part of the price?
3- do you remember the turn around time?

Thanks

1.You ship the gun directly to the FFL via common carrier like UPS or Fed Ex. The FFL/Gunsmith can send it directly back to you because you are the owner who sent it in for service.

2.They will fully strip the pistol and refinish any and all parts you request besides springs and then reassemble and test.

3. Turn time is often dependent on the amount of work in the shop when they receive the pistol and exactly what work you are having done to it.

This is good news - I have a Gemtech Blackside 45 suppressor that they now make 9mm threaded adaptors for. I've been trying to decide which 9mm from the pile to try first.

With the above, I'll be getting a threaded 9mm for my .357sig P239 and having some fun! It's good to know the magazines work as well. Is there anything else needed to swap out like the recoil springs?
