There are many like it, but this one is mine.
I spent a couple months getting my hands on all the different small, easy to conceal, 9mm semi auto pistols. I took any opportunity I could get to shoot as many of them as I could. I chose a Sig P938 AG.
Positives:
- Easy to conceal.
- Single action trigger
- Safety that is just right. It takes a deliberate but not hard flick of the thumb to engage and disengage.
- Checkered aluminum grip panels are very grippy.
- Magazine release is checkered.
- Slide release / Slide stop is textured for grip
- Usable 3-dot metal Siglite Night Sights
- Slide can be racked while the safety is on.
Negatives:
- Plastic serrated trigger. Of all the things Sig cheaped out on...
- Stout recoil spring can make reassembly challenging for some.
- Out of the box, the trigger feels gritty.
- Issued with just one magazine.
- 6 round single stack mag costs as much or more than full size P226 mags.
While obviously inspired by the 1911, the trigger is not 1911. The trigger pivots. Out of the box, the trigger feels gritty. For the amount of money I paid, the plastic serrated trigger is annoying. I picked up an aluminum skeletonized trigger, but lost my nerve while attempting to install it. The trigger hinge pin is domed. Driving it out with anything other than a cupped pin punch and you will scratch the snot out of the frame. Even with a cupped pin punch, I couldn't stomach the increasingly heavy hammer blows. The pin wouldn't budge. I decided to stop.
Sounds bad so far, but it's not.
The trigger smoothed itself out over 200 rounds making it feel lighter than it actually is. Because the slide can be racked with the safety engaged, I can safely chamber and extract a round.
Chamber: Magazine out. Rack slide. Engage safety. Insert mag. Rack slide to chamber round. Eject mag. Top off mag. Insert full mag.
Clear chamber: Make sure safety is engaged. Eject mag. Rack slide. Eject round.
The Siglite night sights are the best sights on this class of small pistol. They are easy to pick up. I'm able to shoot with both eyes open. The grip angle is perfect for a small pistol. Surprisingly, perceived recoil is less stout from this small pistol than you would expect.
In my hands, the 938 is capable of good groups. Used more realistically faster pace fire, it is center of mass accurate all day long. This target was out at 35 feet. Two mags slow fire. Four mags fast fire. In my hands, the P938 shoots best with 124gr ammunition. My 938 hasn't had any issues cycling hollow point ammo.
Mine came with an OWB polymer Sig holster. It's not great, but it's not bad either. Now that it's colder out and I'm wearing baggier clothes, I've used it a few times. I purchased during the last Sig promotion: 2 mags + a range case via mail in rebate.
This is the only single stack 9mm pistol I will own. I don't enjoy shooting small pistols. The 938 is the exception.
