Quick question for ya guys.

I usually use scopes and have not the slightest clue how magnifiers work, but today my Vortex Strikefire and the Primary Arms 3x magnifier came. I already mounted it on my rifle to take to the range tomorrow. I know the red dot will need to be sighted in, but will the magnifier?

No- just sight in the dot and you should be fine. PA is really good about answering questions if you have any problems.

the magnifier will just make it easier to see as you know. i zeroed with just the red dot. after that, i flipped on the magnifier, and since i could see better, i was able to better fine tune my sights.

it would probably be ok to do the initial zero with the magnifier in place.

not a "zero" but the magnifier probably has horizontal and vertical adjustment screws so that you can make adjustments of the red dot to center it when looking in the magnifier.

if your red dot is set up for co-witness, and your iron sights are already zeroed... then i would aim at a target with the irons and adjust the red dot so that the dot is sitting on top the front post. the dot should be covering what you were aiming at. then move the iron sights away. it should at least give you a good starting point. it should put your shots in the correct general area.

i am not claiming to be an expert or anything, but this is what has worked for me.

It also works for me.

I shove a laser bore sight down the muzzle to get my irons on paper. Off sandbags, I fire three rounds onto an AR sighting target. I adjust the irons. Within the next three rounds, I'm zeroed.

I'll adjust the dot to sit right at the tip of the front post.

Since I moved my dot to add a magnifier, I'll have to do all of this again. Also, the Primary Arms 3X magnifier has two adjustment screws for windage & elevation so that you can center the dot in the magnifier.
