So, I'm using MagTech FMJ 180g for range and Winchester Supreme Elite 180g Hollow Points for home/property/life defense. Would anyone recommend something different? I am NEW to the gun ownership world.

Sounds good to me.
While I personally have settled on Gold Dots for defense and load my own range loads, there are several excellent choices available, including yours.

PDX1 works great.:)

I didn't see those at Cabela's. But like I said, I did buy the Winchester Supreme Elite 180g Hollow Points. Pretty good pop.

Same thing, great ammo. It currently feeds my 4516 with fairly impressive groups. It's the civilian version (name change) of Winchester's Ranger T Bonded LE load, so it has some clout behind it.

As stated above, any modern bullet design will perform well if placed well. Use what is most accurate. If it's this, then job 1 is done. Now keep practicing.

It's hard to find a bad .40 JHP load for defensive use.

Your ammo is fine as long as it feeds in your gun.

A problem with some HP ammo, is that the hollow points will clog when going through leather, denim, etc. When that happens, the HP does not expand properly and can behave like a full metal jacket.

Most modern self defense ammo is engineered to penetrate common barriers and reliably expand. Look for ammo from a major ammo maker that will do that. CorBon has a load called "PowRball," and Federal has what they call EFMJ, Expanding Full Metal Jacket. I have personally tested the Federal EFMJ ammo and found it to expand each and every time, regardless of barriers.

I like the new Hornaday Critical Defense loads.

It can be expensive, but it isn't for plinking. Use the cheaper stuff for that.

I think Critical Defense is pretty standard fare, based on my limited testing. It's good ammo, but nothing stellar. Corbon DPX is the berries when it comes to reliable expansion. Speer Gold Dots are quite good as well.
