Silly/Newb question for .223 reloading

Today I took a 2 hour drive down to Cabela's for Black Friday (Absolute mad house!)

Got my 1st reloading kit, tumbler, and all the other stuff.

I didn't get any brass or bullets or powder though. My dad came over and showed me how to use it for .270 ammo.

Well, I want to load .223 ammo and yes I have the right dies. The diameter is .224, but the box of Hornady bullets says 22CAL. That's right, right?

.224 is the correct diameter for the .223 round. There are other bullets which are .223 but those are usually for a different round such as the early guns in .22 hornet.

To reload, you should have a caliber to check bullet diameter.

Get a reloading manual, they will show the correct bullet diameter for each round. Most ammo does not correctly reflect the exact diameter of the bullets used in that ammo. 38 spl uses .357 dia. bullets for an example. For lead bullets the bullet diameter is often larger than specified for reasons my sleepy fingers wont take time to type.

Get a reloading manual, or even better several different ones for a larger base of data for your reloading efforts. These manuals are a great wealth of info like that you asked for here.

This is a great forum with a wealth of info, but sometimes the web can lead to a lot of misinformation which can prove very dangerous.

I like my Lyman manual, but the Speer, Hornady, Lee and Sierra get equal time. These books are the best investment a reloader can make. Check them out, get the one that has a format you like and read it.

I like hands on instruction, and that is how I learned to reload, but I also was encouraged to read my manuals which has kept me out of trouble(so far) and saved me money in my reloading endeavours.

.224 is proper for the .223/5.56mm bullet. You might want to check around for fired cases to reload, as they are very common. At the range I use, I can pick up a lifetime supply of .223 cases off the ground in one afternoon, but I already have a lifetime supply of them. I am amazed that so many AR shooters don't bother to collect their empties.
