I've been using it on my saltwater reels for years. When I got into guns again I use it there, too.
It won't hurt the finish but it WILL stay wet & will gather dust. I use it on sliding surfaces. Once it penetrates it sets up to almost a thin grease. It's a great barrier to corrosion.
