All,

I don't need a right side decocker on my 6906 as it just adds width but no practical function.

I see that the immediate predecessor to the 6906, the 669, was available in several configurations including with a left-side-only safety/decocker.

Will a 669 safety fit my 6906 slide? I understand some minor fitting may be required, but is it functionally the same?

Yes. It is functionally the same and will fit. Most of the fitting is done with the decock lever in the frame.

Okay, this then leads to the obvious question: how do I change it?

I assume the safety is retained in the slide by the firing pin. That is in turn retained by a spring-loaded plunger. That is retained by the rear sight. So to remove the safety do I have to remove the sight, remove the plunger, and remove the firing pin?

Or am I totally out to lunch here?

Edit: yes, I am. Here is a pair of great videos showing exactly what I need to do:

S&W 3RD GENERATION REASSEMBLY (SLIDE) VIDEO #3 OF 4 - YouTube

It may be awhile before I get around to this….

So many experts on the internet...

Had to stop at 3:02. Luckily you don't have to remove the extractor to change the manual safety body. Find a different 'expert' if you want to do that.

FWIW single side safeties from the "Value Line" guns will work as long as you don't care about the color not being stainless.

My CS9 has one with no timing issues. I literally bought the last single side safety in the wild from Cylinder and Slide several years ago, which is when I realized that that the 908/915 safety would work fine.

If you search here you'll find some excellent posts by Fastbolt and BMCM (and probably others) on how to do the swap. It's not at all complicated.
