Slick Colt Commander 45acp....

Great find..............

My last carry 1911 ,after a decade of experimentation, was a LW Commander.

But I switched to DA/SA Sig 220 and 245 for my carry guns.

Still have a Sig C3 CCO...... really like the Officer's model frame with the Commander length slide for IWB carry!

I buy the 7 or 8 rnd 47D steele base compact mags by Wilson myself.

Years ago tried them, but on the pistols tried releasing the slide by the slide release on empty mag several times took away their capability to lock back after last round. Certainly some would say why would you do that? But steel followers don't have that problem. If memory serves, at some point Wilson put steel inserts on the follower, but can't remember for certain. Also am older and also prefer standard capacity mags in 1911's.

But what really matters is that what we use works for us.

Decided to go walk a local gun show Saturday.
Most prices listed on S&W and Colts were naturally insane.

Until I walked up on this....

1980 vintage Colt Commander (Lightweight).
Likely never carried and shot very little.
No wear on this 43 year old Colt.

I have always favored Commander models.

Hey! I've got it's twin! Now I know how much it is worth. I keep meaning to get a holster and carry it.
It's nice to know I spent some of my money on good things, when back in the day most of it went for wine, women, and song.

Well, since we're showing off.........
This is the gun I mentioned in my earlier post. 1959 Colt Commander .45 with a few light mods. This has been my primary carry for close to 30 years. I sent it back to Colt about 10 years ago for a refinish. While they had it, they went completely through to gun and brought everything back to original specs. Darn good shooter. :D

My dad's 1961 Colt 1911 in .38 Super, with the firefighter grips I had custom made some years ago. It's mine now, but probably will never be a carry piece. The .22 Colt revolver was also his. The Combat Master is mine. For carry I have a Sig Nightmare Carry 1911 in .45acp and a Springfield Armory Defender also in .45acp.

That 61 1911 38 super is a very valuable and rare pistol, but I'm sure you already realized that. Of course being your dad's it's priceless to you.

Exfuzz, that's a beautiful specimen.
My first handgun was a 79/80 Combat Commander in Coltguard. Sadly, had to trade it for a 4" 686, because my chief wouldn't let me carry an auto; as a young, new cop, I couldn't afford both. :(

From 71-80ish I carried a model 66 then went to 1911's for 27 yrs or so. I have owned several including LW Commanders, one officer's model and several customs. I find the 5" guns to be a little easier to shoot but preferred carrying the Commander length. I only have two 5" custom's now and don't carry them much any more. Still love the platform over all others. I mostly shoot and carry striker fired 9mm's these days but I could easily go back to a 1911 and be very happy!

I've been buying, trading, selling Colt Commanders since I turned 21 a mere 56 years ago LOL. If I was ever limited to one semi-auto it would be a 1911. I've always been a fan of two tone 1911s when they first became popular in the 80s.

Here's my only Colt, a 1988 model I bought in June out of an estate. All the Colts were modified in a very similar manner unfortunately no idea who did the work. The frame (steel) is electorless nickel, some kind of black finish on the slide. It came with MMC fixed sights, blue small parts and some real ugly rubber grips.

I changed a few things: replaced the rear with a Harrison Designs retro, new old stock Colt grips, a Wilson checkered mainspring housing, EGW stainless slide stop, extended mag release, Nowlin fitted stainless barrel bushing, Ed Brown thumb safety and some gray grip tape on the front strap. This thing is a great shooter, accurate and reliable, a frequent carry piece.

Colt Wiley Clapp CCO & XSE CC

Commander size 1911s are hard to beat. The short framed CCO is nice to carry. This one sort of mimics Gunsights', short trigger, upgraded internals, double safety and trijicon DXT big dot. The XSE is just a cool smooth shooting heavy stainless commander with gold bead front sight. What's not the love. Makes a fine club too if you don't want to waste the bullet!

Hope everyone has a very merry Christmas!

Fred
