Welcome to the Forum. What is an "L" shaped lock? Please post a photo. There are a few genuine padlocks with S&W on them, but probably 99% of locks you see are real padlocks with fake S&W markings. Even those can be conversation pieces, a fellow collector has one that's about the size of a large frying pan that the seller claimed was used to lock the chain securing the S&W cannon guarding the main gate to the plant in the Civil War ! ( The was no "plant" in the Civil war !) Ed.

The same seller had the same locks with Colt, Winchester, Marlin, Sharp, etc markings on them and similar provenance claims. I'm sure they were all original, right? Years ago we used to say " It must be true, I read it in the newspapers" - now " It's I saw it on the internet !" Ed. ( PS: Receiver hitch lock is a good guess, as S&W sold receiver hitches and hitch plugs in the past. Ed )

That's the first S&W lock I've seen that I like! :D

It sure doesn't look too old (or especially collectible), but I sure like having seen it - thanks for taking the time to post, and I hope you get some info on it.
