smith and wesson m&p 9 full size problem

Hello

I'm new to the smith and Wesson m&p 9 full size with thumb safety I fully loaded the mag and loaded the pistol with out touching the slide lock it loads a round is that normal or should I contact smith and Wesson

It is normal. On mine, if you put it in easy it stays put, and if you slam it in it closes. Competition guys like it that way.
Just keep the booger hook off the bang switch when inserting the magazine.

Caveat: If you put it in "easy" you must pull down on mag to make sure it is seated.

Page 17 of the owners manual:
WARNING: DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE WHEN INSERTING A LOADED MAGAZINE INTO THE PISTOL. EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE COULD CAUSE THE SLIDE TO MOVE FORWARD, CHAMBERING A ROUND
AND MAKING THE PISTOL READY TO FIRE.

• To make sure that the magazine is fully and securely inserted,
apply some removal pressure to the exposed portion of the
magazine floorplate.

• Pull the slide to the rear and release it, allowing it to carry fully
forward. This strips a cartridge from the magazine and seats it
in the chamber of the barrel.

Of course the S&W warning is ridiculous in the case of a California 10 round magazine. It takes a big smack to get the mag to lock if you're able to get 10 rounds in the mag in the first place. It's probably 50/50 whether my wife's 9mm auto-chambers. My 40 cal is not quite so tight with the 10th round - maybe auto-chambers 1/3 of the time.

My m&p 40 does the same. Just make doubly sure that the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction & make sure to keep your finger of of the trigger.

Just so you know, according to the gurus at my lgs, Glocks do the same thing.

That once shoot it a few times you'll be trying to justify the extra money for a compact model. Remember, 1 handgun is never enough and you came to the wrong place for someone to tell you no!

My FS9 and 9C will do it if I whack it hard enough. It's not consistent though.

I could hit my Sig with a sledge hammer and not happen, nor my M9.

Just remember this is not a feature. It was not designed to do this.

The weight of the magazine has a lot to do with it. If I download my mags to 10 or less rounds, it will never "auto forward". But if I'm using my 17, 22, or 28 round mags it will do it every time. There's probably a "Newtonian" formula for explaining this but I certainly don't know it. It's not really a feature I use in competition because IDPA is limited to 10 rounds in the mag, and in USPSA I plan my reloads so I'm reloading with a round still in the chamber, if I go to slide lock in USPSA, I've screwed something up. The only time I take advantage of this "feature" is at the practice range.
