Smith & Wesson .44,Double Action Frontier Box, rough, $271

I guess I missed the boat. I think I came to the conclusion when I posted revolvers with original boxes in my collection and realized I have no NM #3 revolvers with original boxes, and, in fact, no boxes bigger than .38 cal.

I’m ecstatic to have THREE Baby Russian revolvers in their original boxes, one being blued with walnut stocks, and this sort of made me not see the forest through the trees. (To me, the Baby Russian is about the most beautiful box manufactured during that era.)

I didn’t also understand the value of this box and decided $300 was about as high as I would go for it, shipped and with sales tax. The condition is what threw me…

I should also ask, where is there a guide for valuation for boxes without having to use gut instinct based on what it is and condition? So I don’t make the same mistake again? I created this thread as I thought the price to be fair to a little high and not a bargain.

Hi There,

The value of anything is the price people are willing to pay for it.
An auction is probably the best way for the public to express their
evaluation of an item. People are not uniform in their ideas and
will evaluate items based on their desires and the liquidity of their
wallets.

The more someone wants something, the more value they place
on it. What curbs individuals in their purchasing power is their
personal wealth and the financial obligations they are committed
to pay.

Ebay

Yeah,
Ebay isn’t always your best choice to sell an antique item. It’s often amazing what folks are selling just to avoid auction house fees I guess.

All I can say is Nice box in any condition, And Where are you going to find another 1.
If you need it Or want it. It will only increase in Value. Better than money in the bank for sure.

I looked at this box. Would have been a serious bidder too...if the seller would have posted it to Australia.
I think it was a rare box at a reasonable price.

Dumb question about age of the box..

It is a nice box. I almost won that one, but was out of town when the auction closed. That box is not often found. I have that particular model and barrel length and it would have been my best box (rarest) box to date.
What is the saying, if you snooze, you loose

Ok, I’m not an expert.. or even close! How old would 5his box be?

Thanks,
Greg

If the number on the label is the serial number it could have shipped in the mid 1890's. Others may have a better guess
