I prefer the M&P compact better. Both are 9mm.

I have not shot this gun, but just from handleing them at home , a couple of observations:

- I get a better grip on the Smith. The standard pinky finger extension makes a difference for me. Overall grip, for me, is better w/ the smith. The XD doesn't come standard w/ pinky extension, only an plastic sleeve to slide over a full size mag. Apprears to work ok, but does have an unsightly gap.

- grip is not modifiable with the XD (such as grip inserts/ back straps) , it is with the smith

- standard sights are better on the XD- it has a FO front sight. I prefer the ameriglo sights I have on my smith.

- trigger pull - similar, neither is great, but due to the grip, my finger is better placed on the smith, giving me sensation of better trigger

- finish- the smith appears to have a smoother melonite like finish than the XD

- mag capacity- XD has 13 rds, smith, 12

- warranty- both lifetime. Never had to use the smith, but on other XD models I own, SA did very well. ( both times I used it, it was my fault, not the gun)

Overall my preference is for my M&PC. It just "feels" better. I have other XDs, a XD tactical 9 and a XD 45. Like them both and use them, but thought you'd enjoy my comparison.

So not sure what I'll do with it, but fortunately have space in the safe......

I like the changes they made to the mod 2's...kinda like what smith did with the M2.0. changed a bunch of little stuff without totally re-vamping the platform. although to hear springfield talk about them when they first came out, you'd think they thought they were re-inventing the wheel or something. The whole "grip zone" thing kinda cracks me up though. I have a regular XD .45 tactical with a thumb safety. I bought it before I decided I don't really need or want a thumb safety. thats ok, it provides a thumb rest for my strong side thumb so I don't ride the slide stop. I have a tendancy to do that with XD's.

I've stumbled across 2 compact XD 9mm's, and I never fell for either of them. To me they feel blocky, overly bulky, and just kind of abrasive and uncomfortable, with all the rough surfaces and corners. I don't like how the designers went out of their way to give them that nifty-keen Klingon battle cruiser look, like their primary goal was to make it look like a cool comic-book gun. Also, I just didn't shoot them very well, so I put them back into circulation.

The XD always felt somewhat top heavy to me, it don't seem to sit as naturally in the hand as the M&P or even the Glocks.

Its subjective. For me I absolutely hate Smith and Wesson Semi-auto grips. The angle is fine, the feel/texture is not. I have an XD9 Mod.2 Sub comp and I totally love it. Not only am i up to 800 rounds of failure free shooting but the feel in hand cant be beaten, for me.

A buddy of mine bought a Mod 2 and brought it over to shoot.
It felt a bit clunky to me, but I have my crooked arthritic hands to deal with. I did shoot it quite well, though and was impressed with the sights. It seemed well built and overall a decent sd handgun. I still prefer my M&P 9c or 45c.

That Mod.2 shoots better than any of their smaller guns like the XDs. My son has one and it shoots great. You have the extended 16rd. I wouldn't get rid of it unless you're going to buy more S&W's then it's a win win. LOL
