Being new to the group, I'd like to know the definition to a few things. What's a free floating handrail? Like how can it be attached and be "free floating"? Magpul MOE? What's the MOE stand for? Mil-spec? I'm assuming it's "military specifications". (I've never been in the military) Any other part names with definitions will be appreciated.

I also had a question about some of the abbreviations like IMHO and MOA. Can anyone bring me up to speed.

Free float handguards attach only at the barrel nut, and do not touch the barrel at any other point. Technically, and AR is never truly free floated, due to the gas block and gas tube, but that is another discussion.

Magpul MOE - Magpul Original Equipment

MOA - Minute of angle. A minute is 1/60th of a degree.

At 100 yds, 1 MOA is just over 1". At 200 yds, 1 MOA is just over 2". At 300 yds, 1 MOA is just over 3". At 50 yds, 1 MOA is approximately 1/2".

I milliradion (1 mil) will subtend 1 yard at 1000 yds. So....1 mil @ 100 yds is 3.6". Many mil-dot scopes have turrets calibrated in .1 mil increments. So, .1 mil @ 100 yds is .36".

I'll add what I understand free floating hand guards are good for,
When you put pressure to a non ff hand gaurd it transfers some of that force to the barrel witch can alter your shot. Pressure applied to a ff hand gaurd does not alter the bullets projectory.

A true free float barrel lets the complete harmonic action occur while the bullet travels through the barrel.
although there is some discussion about the gas tube but because the gas tube is not affixed into the upper reciever but just extends into it I dont think the gas tube affects the harmonic transmissions!!
