Something Nice for the Nurses

One of my colleagues had a lot of trouble with her recent pregnancy; some her treatment was stuff I did not know was a thing - not just bed rest in the hospital, but among other things IV BP meds. She was transferred to a bigger hospital and eventually had emergency surgery on herself AND a C section at the same time. After about 3 months, she will get to rescue him from the NICU. The care for both of them and the outcome borders on a miracle. I am pretty sure that 30 years ago, the outcome would not have been positive.

Speaking as an ER RN-NP, nurse practitioners, I'd say gift cards to Starbucks. Hospital coffee is atrocious, possibly as bad as the coffee I drank for 20yrs in the Navy as a Corpsman. Now, my wife is an MD and she raves about hospital coffee, which is usually made by mixing coffee syrup with hot water. Then again, after sampling her cooking, I understand why she loves hospital coffee and I do the cooking. The above was correct, if a shift staffer fails to show up, it falls on the outgoing staff to decide who stays. Working the ER is quite trying, dealing with death and misery, seeing how others treat others is tough.

I have to have a therapeutic phlebotomy (blood letting) every two to three months, at the chemo unit, so every 6 months I take in a package of condiments to the nurse's lounge. Big bottles of ketchup, mustard, and sweet relish. It never fails, someone needs some for their lunch, or dinner, or midnight break. The other patients appreciate as well because they can get some ketchup for their hamburger because they forgot to order it, (or didn't realize they had to) with their meal.

If you've ever spent 5 minutes trying to open one of those plastic bags only to have it split the full length, then dribble something nasty all over your fresh clean uniform, you know bottles of product are plenty welcome.

I'm going in for some heart work tomorrow and will thank the cardiac unit with their own package of condiments, on Thursday when I have to go back.
