I kept getting a notice from a place in California that there was unclaimed property or money for my wife. They wanted her SS# a copy of her DL and a signed limited power of attorney to claim these funds. Plus they get paid a high percentage.

Ya right! Scam! So I kept shredding them.

We I got another one as was about to report them when I did some digging on the internet. Seems this company is semi legit and all they are doing is going to States unclaimed property websites and claiming stuff that the owner could do on their own.

I went to the Florida Treasure Hunt .org site ( a real legit site)

" + title_text + " (click this weird link)

Typed in my wife's name and lo and behold there was a few hundred bucks from a past employment investment fund.

Se we completed the form, mailed it in and need to wait 60-90 days (you can track it online)

I worked for the State so I know its a legit website.

Now how to sneak it past her when it comes in so I can buy another gun?.:D

Great rulethree, now the next step, go to all of the states, at least all where your wife or you or relatives have lived.
How do you know that what they found was in FL?

All States have an unclaimed funds site. Everyone should check theirs. Especially for estates. When someone passes away they do a search for bank accounts etc, but nothing is perfect. My Dad is is the process of recovering $1200 for an account that my Grandmother had, she passed away 13 years ago. A search was done, but they missed it.

Rule3, go ahead and buy that gun! To be fair at least get the wife a new mop so she doesnt feel left out. Maybe even one of those Swiffer dusters, I hear all the ladies love them.

I already told her I get a finders and research fee. Hey I did all the work:D

As far as finding it in Florida, I figured she has only lived in 3 States so I tried the most likely and lucked out. As others posted every State has a similar web site so give it a try.

Wow! Great thread. I checked the Texas unclaimed property site and found that they are holding $29.00 in my name. Thats not a lot but it will buy my wife and I a couple or three lunches. Thanks!

A friend's son had the same thing happen. We thought it was a scam, but after checking into it, I found out it was true. But her son complained it was a hassle to send the required paperwork, and last I knew he didn't claim the money. If I remember right, it was close to $3000. He's the type that would expect them to personally deliver the cash to him, with no "hassle" involved on his part.

Nothing for me, but I found some for my Dad, two old accounts for my sister, and FIVE old refunds due her late husband that she can receive.

Thanks for posting.

go to Unclaimed.org, has link to all the states. Its free, and if you lived in more than one state, you can check those states as well.

For any of you that live or lived in North Carolina in the 80's or 90's and had any investments that you redeemed, check the Sec of state unclaimed money site.
During that period of time the state was collecting a "tax" on the investment dividends that was later found to be unconstitutional and was forced to refund the taxes collected. Instead of mailing out a refund check they placed the funds with the Sec of state for distribution. Some was distributed but most is still being held in the Sec's account.
My wife was due a little over 3K which she finally collected about 5 years ago.

S.C. Resisiprosity

Comming in from another direction is the surprise we got when we went to renew our DL here in FLA. Seems that S.C. had decided to join the rest of the country with interstate resiprosity. So with the 3 kinds of ID we were required to bring in order to have the privilage of renewing out DL for 62 bucks, there was an additional glitch when my wifes "background" was checked, and they wouldn't issue her new one until we got right with S.C. We called-the infraction was 24 years old, and we told them we had paid the fine, 24 years ago. They said, yes, you paid the County, but not the state! 200 bucks-plus paper work, etc, etc. After the computers had visited, we were able to pay her 62 bucks, after showing birth cert, marriage Lisc, and more, to make sure we weren't illegal aliens, in which case they would have issued us free California DL's I guess, if mot one from Florida. The previous year they doubled all of the registration and tag fees, including those for Disabled Veterans, but it's still called a privilage (?). Flapjack.
