Legislation has passed both the House and Senate to drop a permit requirement for concealed carry. It awaits the Governor's signature.

"TIP-O'-THE HAT" to So. Dakota Legislature

I am really impressed with a legislature that actually
trusts and respects its constituents. To me, being permit-free
just makes good sense. I hope that all who signed-on to that
bill get re-elected. They're obviously doing their jobs AND
paying attention. If I lived there, I'd be proud of them.

Back in 1998 I lived in Sturgis and got my CCW permit. I filled out a 1-page form, left a check for $10, and got it in the mail a week later. MUCH different than here in TN, and a lot cheaper, that's for sure. Turns out that in SD a permit isn't required if you want to carry openly, and that's what I did once or twice. It feels weird, being a city kid, born in SD but raised in Nashville, having a handgun hanging openly off my side.

When I lived there I had to pick up my Ruger Redhawk from a local dealer before she went on vacation. I forgot my soft case, so I stuck my 7.5" .44 magnum Redhawk in my belt and walked home. It was like Moses and the Red Sea, as wave of bikers got out of my way. The lone SD state trooper asked me if it was loaded, to which I whispered, "no". I finally made it to my car and headed north out of town.

Sounds like good news to me. Maybe a good place to go on vacation. What's to do in South Dakota?
Visit Mt. Rushmore
Hike/Drive Spearfish Canyon
Hike Mt. Harney
Climb the Needles (if your a climber)
Visit Badlands National Park (best at sunrise or sunset)
Hike/Fish/Camp at Custer State Park
Jewel Cave National Park
Wind Cave National Park (great if you find the elk herd)
Devil's Tower in Wyoming is a day trip

Oahe Dam, Lake Poinsett, Wall Drug, Deadwood, Lead, Hill City, Swim in Sylvan Lake(near needles and Harney Peak), many places, faces, and good people.

Go on a prairie dog shoot. Tremendous fun and the ranchers
appreciate gettin' rid of them as well. Take lots of ammo.
Theres always an occasional prairie rattler to shoot your
pistolas at. It's also the center of the universe for Pheasant.

I grew up in South Dakota and fortunately for me my Dad still lives there and owns land...I get back a couple of times a year, in the spring for planting:) and in the fall for hunting.:D The other posts cover some of the great things to do.

When I was a kid deer hunting with Dad I remember going to the little town of Hecla for breakfast. I noticed there were no police stations or fire stations or any businesses to speak of except for a small grocery store and a cafe...not even a stop light. I asked my Dad how far to a police station and he said the sheriff lives in Aberdeen 70 miles away. I replied that that would be a long wait if you had trouble and had to call the sheriff! He said, "If you cause trouble around here you had better hope ALL they do is call the sheriff..." In those days everyone had a couple of long guns on the window rack in their truck...all you had to do was look in the parking lot at the high school to know that. Never a problem.

Wouldn't it be an interesting concept to have something like the Constitution legalized in all 50 states? I paid 185.50, plus 300 miles or so of gas to get my CCW. I figgered that as soon as I did, someone that is somebody, would read the constitution and say, "wow", great idea, lets go by this document for a while now that we got old Gordon's money. Boo Hoo Hoo.
Peace,
gordon
