A truly sad day in culinary excellence was when Taco Bell discontinued their Verde sauce. :(

Wow! I never thought I would see Taco Bell and culinary used in the same sentence.

About 20 years ago Taco Bell offered a "fresca" menu featuring a modest imitation of salsa pico de gallo. The soft chicken tacos fresca were very nice.

Pico de gallo (literally, beak of the rooster) is a fresh salsa made with tomatoes, chiles, onions, cilantro, and lime juice (allowances for individual chefs to build on the theme). Uncooked, served chilled as a topping for burritos, eggs, enchiladas, tostadas, and other treats. Very light, very tasty.

"Verde sauce"? Meh, just another concoction with too much jalapeno for most folks, in my humble opinion.
