Just returned from a 4 day trek through the Sierra Nevadas, south of Lake Tahoe. This trip I brought my aptly named 625-6 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. The chipmunks are pretty aggressive in this neck of the woods. She was stoked with 255 gr hard cast and rode in a Galco Alaskan chest rig; the walnut handles are from Altamont.IMG_0250.jpeg

Haha! you never know when you may have to fight your way out of a full frontal attack from a battalion of marauding chipmunks!

Beautiful gun! Nice fancy walnut in the stocks! I didn't realize Altamont would do custom order options on their existing designs. Or, did they once offer those combat stocks in walnut?

I think these were a limited run.

I’m not usually a big fan of Altamont BUT those grips are awesome. I’m also a fan of the Mgnaporting. Can you shoot ACP in that gun ?

Nothing like hiking in the Rockies. Your gear points to you know how to use it, which speaks of experience. That 625MG is just icing on the cake! I'm envious I'm too old such adventures any more.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. That revolver and load should handle anything in that country with the exception of mister Squatch. But even a .44 magnum would be lacking in that case LOL.

Nice! I have an early .44 Mag 'Mountain Gun' and it is my favorite for going into the woods; I generally carry some of the rare Thunder Ranch .44 Special loads; hotter than normal, but less recoil than the Magnum rounds. Seyfried and Campbell knew what they were doing when they created the Mountain Gun concept.

FWIW: Those aren't chipmunks but Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels! Take my word for it; retired Wildlife Biologist and I'm from the Gov't to help you! :D:D:D:D:D

The clue is that the stripe goes through the eye.

Awesome country… looks like an amazing trip. I had the 625-7 3” 45 Colt with me last week hiking mid/upper Arizona areas. I love 45 Colt. Hopefully Smith releases the new MG in 45 Colt again.

lol Thanks for the reminder. I knew that and have got in the bad habit of using the colloquial handle of chipmunk. 😀

Ditto. Hoping Smith brings out both 45 acp and LC with new no lock being offered by Lipseys in 629.
Looks like you had a fun adventure. Thanks for posting the nice photos.
I'm hoping to find one of those 45 LC mountain guns one of these days.

Great looking rig overall...I like that you mag-na-ported her... especially with those stout BB rounds...gosh your photos make me long to return out West...big sigh

Assuming you’re in California, are you permitted to carry a handgun if you’re not a LEO?
