Anyone have a reliable web source for Speer bullets? Everywhere I have looked is out of stock for what I am looking for.

Thanks

If you told me that Speer......

If you told me that Speer went out of business I'd believe it because their products have been extremely scarce these last few years. If you look on the web, every item is out of stock. Good luck on finding some. Gun shows might be a good place to check out.

I used to use Speer exclusively, now I use anything I can get.

Rifle? Handgun? Caliber?

Right now Midway USA has 157 Speer bullets listed with 107 of them available. Of course the ones you are looking for are probably part of the out if stock listings.

Midsouth Shooters has a bunch in stock too including some 38/357, 44 and 45 cal bullets.

Again, rifle or handgun?

I quizzed the salesman at Scheel's about the Speer bullet shortage and he claimed Speer landed some big government contracts and they weren't filling commercial orders. I did find three boxes of Speer .224 caliber 55 grain JSP's at Scheel's and bought all three boxes. My Remington 788 loves these bullets and will go sub MOA with these tack drivers.

I also recently bought some Speer .357 caliber 148 grain HBWC's, 1000 to be exact, from a private individual who had a hoard he was selling off because he had stopped shooting competitions.

Hornaday seems to be filling the void and is certainly filling my reloading shelves.

Speer went down the tubes when ATK acquired them. They began to discontinue the Hot-Core line and replace it with the DeepCurl. They then found all sorts of unexplained pressure excursions. They cancelled the conversion and started to return to Hot-Core with certain exceptions. Not exactly the best business model.

I love their HBWC, but everyone else seems to as well. They're often out of stock, but I see plenty of other Speer bullets here and there.

Try Gunstop in Minnetonka, he carries lots of Speer, but I don't know if he normally does mail order.

357 (125 grain) and 44 (210, 240 grain) gold dot hp.

Well then......

That would make sense. But by now they should have expanded production it they cared anything about the consumer. I suppose their contracts are going to be there forever and don't need consumers any more.

Let Hornady fill the void. I've got one kind of Speer bullet I'd like to have for SD round, then their products can be on the shelf or not.

BTW Thanks for the tips on who at least is stocking them. It might make it easier for us/me to find something we can use.

The only 44 bullet they seem to make or sell any more is the self defense model flying ashtrays for the 44 special.
Speer Gold Dot Bullets 44 Cal (429 Diameter) 200 Grain Bonded Jacketed
I am continuing to stock up on those as I like to practice with the same (home made version of the) ammo I carry.
IMHO The only reason they still make these bullets is the ammo they go in sells like hotcakes.

Their 270 JSP was a mainstay of the 444 community although the Hornady 265 JFP performs very well having been designed for the 444.
"Speer went down the tubes when ATK acquired them."
Yep.
Remington just did the same thing when they acquired Marlin and then destroyed it.
That was a tragedy.
When Speer completely dies we will find something else.

There is a reason for anti-monopoly and price fixing laws.
Same reason we don't like dictators.

It's a shame really. I have been a big fan of gold dot hollow points for a long time and I think they perform amazingly. Watching all the various videos on youtube I see that Gold Dots seemingly outperform the other bonded hp in terms of expansion diameter and retained mass.

Not looking to start a discussion about that, just wanting to load some up. I guess I will have to focus on another manufacturer.... and get another manual.

Have you tried Bullets.com? I didn't make exact note of what you are after but they seem to have at least the .429" one.

This week I bought .38 cal 135gr Gold Dot Hollow Points from Midway and 9mm 125gr GDHP's from Brownells.

I should have enough for the next several election cycles and at least two zombie incursions.

For some reason I do like the Gold Dots but don't load many as they are not easily found. As far as bonded..they really aren't classic bonded bullets. An industry guy told me that they are actually plated but thickly plated so they act like cup and core bullets as far as shooting but expand more readily. True?? Don't know or it doesn't seem to matter. but the Gold Dots seem to be better than any Hornady HPs(in handguns). Do theymake Gold dot rifle bullets? I mostly use Nosler or Sierra in rifles.

I like the Gold Dot's because They are made for short barreled Pistols and are very accurate in My Ruger SP-101 with a 2.25" Barrel.
But for some reason I would have better luck finding Diamonds in My Back Yard as They are impossible to find anymore.

I just checked and Midway has the 135 grain GDHP in .357 in stock at present. Bit surprized by that because when I got a recent notification they sold out quickly (BTW ordered 6 boxes that day). Apparently they have received another shipment in the interim.

speer bullets

keep checking Powder Valley, Grafs , Midway, I have found 9mm 115 gold dots. .38 cal. 135 gold dots. .44 cal. 200 gr gold dots within last 6 months. love them gold dots. Midway and Grafs both have some speer rifle bullets also. just check every day. Until Nov. 9th anyway then its going to be all gone

Powder Valley has been my best source for many years. However, check website daily as some difficult-to-find items show up suddenly and they're gone just as fast.

I consider Speer to be gone already.
They have discontinued a majority of the bullets they used to make.
Unfortunately some were very good and some unique.
We are already seeing the marketplace filling a few of those holes.
Unless altered by fiat, capitalism does work.

As an uncommon example:
The Speer 270 gr. JFN was one of the very few jacketed heavy bullets for 44's.
Huntingtons has just in the last few days decided to market the Woodleigh weldcore 280 FN designed for the 444.
They are totally different bullets but I suspect someone decided that the 280 now helps fill an emptier market.
If they can price the Weldcore less than $1/bullet they may have a (minor) hit on their hands.
