Info on Ralph Smith
Ralph Smith began his career in 1973 when custom knifemaking was in its formative years. Typical of many young makers back then, he had to learn a lot by himself. “Knifemaking at that time was top-secret and no one shared their secrets,” Smith recalls. “There were no schools, no teachers.”
As a construction engineer and then a vice president for Fluor Corp, Smith was exposed to many different styles of cutlery from around the world. Yet he found his inspiration closer to home in fellow South Carolinian Michael Collins, a wildlife artist and engraver who made some of the finest knives of the period.
Today, advancements in machinery, materials and technology have forever changed the way we look at knives. Smith has been crafting knives for nearly 40 years now and has been a voting member of the Knifemakers Guild since 1981. He was a founding member and three-term president of the South Carolina Knifemakers Association. He is highly regarded by his peers and customers alike. His well-equipped shop near Greer, SouthCarolina, is a frequent gathering place for knifemaking friends and customers.
