Anybody ever been bit by a spider? A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a spot on the back of my leg and asked my wife to look at it. She said it was a round sore on my leg a little larger than a dime. A visit to the doctor and she said it looked like an insect bite. It's basically leaving a hole in the back of my leg but I have no idea when I could have been bitten by anything and if I was, I never felt it. The only thing I can think of is a spider bite. Anybody ever had something similar?

If that were a brown-recluse, you're in for a world of hurt and permanent scarring. Did the doc take a majic-marker and draw a perimeter around the swollen area to see if it gets larger? When you say 'hole' in your leg, it makes me nervous. A typical spider-bite shouldn't look much more than what a red-ant would leave, or a mosquito.

I got bit by a brown recluse during basic in 1983 and I still have a hole in my arm.

Spider bite

Yes I have. Was woken up early A.M. by a stabbing pain in my right hand. Noticed two puncture marks about 1/8" apart, on the back of my hand. Spider bite, which I assume was a Black Widow as I had no tissue loss. But my hand really hurt for six or eight weeks.

As for your doctors advise, I would suggest a second Opinion, by someone who knows what they are looking at.

^^^^ They are right most likely a brown recluse. You should really go to a diffrent doctor and have it treated.

Yes. Got bit by a brown recluse while I was at Lowry AFB, Colorado. It not only put a hole in my back but it rotted the flesh in and around the area of the bite. I put it off for 2 weeks (not smart) and finally saw a civilian Dr.

I don't care for any spiders but brown recluse scare the you know what out of me. I have seen the effects of some their bites and they can be terrible. I have also read that sometimes when they bite you will not even feel it.
Google brown recluse and you will get a lot of info including how to identify a bite,
If you think it could be a recluse bite I'd be seeing the doctor again.

Nailed by a recluse spider several years ago. Considerable pain and discomfort. Serious course of antibiotics cleared it up, but not without a nasty scar.

Bitten by a black widow years ago. 3 solid weeks of pain and discomfort, although no lasting debilitation. Medical intervention could have alleviated much discomfort.

Had a man working for me about 10 years ago, got bitten by a recluse spider and chose to tough it out at home. Ended up in the hospital and had a baseball-size chunk taken out of his upper back, then laid up for over a month before he could think about returning to work again.

Nothing to ignore. Get medical attention.

Even little innocuous spiders can have a helluva bite on 'em.
I had 3 little spots one morning, one on my foot and 2 on the top of on ear. Hurt a little, then itched like crazy for weeks, scabbed up and fell off about a half dozen times before they healed up. No holes or tissue loss, but I'm pretty sure I disturbed some of the little 8 legged buggers that were just minding their own business.

1. People vary in response to venoms.
2. A spider bite will generally have 2 punctures and an insect will have one.
3. Tick bites can be much worse (My Agency requires ALL tick bites be reported to a supervisor).
4. Several "house" spiders have relatively potent venoms. Those little green ones have a bad bite as do the light colored ones with elongated bodies.

I have seen a couple of brown recluse bites and they can be nasty. I thought I had one myself, but the docs thought not, "just" a cellulitis infection, which requires the same treatment, a big shot of an antibiotic plus a 10- or 14-day course of oral antibiotics.

If it's been 2 weeks I would guess it's noting serious. From what I have heard about bites from the venomous spiders, you will know when it happens and usually isn't something you can just tough out.

A recluse bite....

A recluse bite can be mild or can progress with necrosis until the bones can be seen and never heal completely over. I don't know what they can do to stop the progression, but for pete's sake see a doctor because sometimes recluse bites just get worse and worse as days and weeks go by.

Get another opinion!!! You don't want MRSA. My son had it a few years ago and almost lost his right arm. Started out like you describe.

About 4 years ago I put on a work glove to pull weeds. There was a sting to my right index finger so I smacked my right finger with the left hand and kept on weeding. About an hour later, the finger was hurting, took the glove off and saw a hole at the base of the finger and it was bleeding and swelling up. I put some peroxide on it. The next day the swelling had spread into the back of the hand, I couldn't see my knuckles and it was moving into the middle finger. I was outside the house looking at the hand trying to decide if I should go to a doctor. The hole had begun leaking white pus and blood, suddenly a bee landed on the bite and stung it. I couldn't believe my eyes it happened so fast. The pain felt like a blow torch on my hand. I had my daughter drive me to the hospital. They gave me a shot and said it was probably a recluse spider. I was on antibiotics for about 6 months. Four yrs later, the hole is still there. It is always sore and will not heal.
Good luck.

I woke up one morning years ago to find my left hand was sore & swollen, closer inspection I found a raised lump with two puncture marks about 1/8" apart. Never saw what did it and I assumed it was a common "house spider" or one of those large "wolf" spiders that sometimes get in. My hand was sore & noticably swollen and I felt sick however I didnt go see a doctor, instead I just stayed home. It cleared up later that day.

I've been bitten a couple of times by spiders, according to my doc even a large "wolf spider" or "housespider" can cause a reaction in some people. I had my leg swell up once, got real red and angry looking, we cooked up a poltice and it got well in a couple days. Another time I had grabbed a jacket off the wall it had been hanging on for a couple months and pulled it on without even thinking to shake it out, I worked out in the shop for hours and went in late for dinner. My wrist had an itchy spot, like a skeeter had bit me. In the morning I noticed the wrist was slightly swollen and angry red, felt hot to the touch. I got through that day and knew I would be back in town the next so I let it go. When I got up Monday I had what felt like water under my skin way past half-way up my arm, I drove down to the local doc in a box...Doc said "That would have cost you your arm not too many years ago." He said spiders cause more injury through infection than anything else, I had cellulitis or infection under my skin, a shot of penicillin and I was good to go. A buddy of mine ened up with a hole in his leg that started out as a red bump, progressed to a red bump with a purple ring, then the whole thing turned purple, then black, then started sinking...he went to the doc. They ended up having to give him skin grafts, that skin rotted right down to his major leg bone, he waited too long.
