Reblued would be okay. If I were going to paint it, I would use one of those spray on finishes that Brownells sells thats made specifically for firearms.

The Birch Wood Casey product "Super Blue" is vastly improved in the last few years . I have fixed up a couple shotguns and my Remington 06 project was almost without any blue left when I started . It now looks great I think better than new . I had to learn to actually follow the directions , I usually just consider instructions just their opinion , but it helps with this product .

your mossberg 500 has an alloy receiver which cannot be reblued, although there are other refinishing methods available like anodizing. the barrel can be reblued.

What do you want it to look like when you're done?

If it's not important you can spray paint it, most people use flat paint if it's for hunting and there are even camoflage paints available.

There is a technique that I've seen advertised, but can't remember what it's called, where they can paint it in any kind of pattern or even make it look like a brick wall.

If you want to reblue/reanodize it look at Brownells website, they should have do it yourself kits available.

whats on it now has like a purple tint to it, I got it used but looks original factory finish , but not sure. was thinking like a black finish but not sure what would hold up with use and heat. or if I would have to prime it 1st.

If you paint us flat 1400 or its 1200 barbeq paint

I highly recommend "Duracoat". Even amateurs get a good job from it and it is even good for inside the gun. ...... Big Cholla

"Duracoat" that's the name of the stuff I couldn't remember, I think. I've read the advertisements but can't tell you anything about it.

I've seen guys that had gotten good results using nothing but flat black primer, Krylong works very well. I'm sure Bar B Que paint would work too or even engine paint. Or you could just leave it purple, put a Barney sticker on the stock and call it a limited edition youth gun.

The most durable finish for the aluminum receiver is Class III hard anodize (like AR-15). It is superior to the original factory finish. You can get it here: Welcome to US Anodizing. They can also paint the ferrous metal parts if you wish.

For a hunting gun, Duracoat is the way to go. All but rustproof, and easy to touch up (not usually needed, though).

Brownell's Alumahyde II is what I use for such projects. It contains an epoxy formulation and is resistant to most solvents. I've used it to paint over stainless barrels on my AR-10 .243 and my JP Grendel. Tough stuff. It is best to do it when the temp. is 90 degrees or so, though, or you can use a hair dryer or other heat source to speed curing.
