Squib load in an 80's .44 Magnum

I would think if you drill a hole in the center of a wooden dowel, you can use the dowel as a pilot and not risk hitting the side of the barrel. I would also have a block of wood behind the barrel to stop the drill if you push to hard.

That said, try a brass rod first with oil
 
I made some squibb rods from brass round stock which is almost an exact fit of the bore diameter. They have helped shooters remlove stuck jacketed bullets.
