Stacked Leather Handled Knife

The stacked handle of this Rinaldi Forest Knife is a little different from the usual smooth varnished finish. The raw edges are quite comfortable in hand, at the desk, at least. I don't know yet if the surface will create hot spots in use, or how the raw edges will take dirt.

Having worked with several leather handle knife builds the leather is goin to retain oil, grime sweat etc from use But that's not a bad thing. It will most likely age like a nice carbon steel blade as it develops patina. From what I have read about untreated stacked leather handles, moisture is the issue. Regardless- that's a nice blade and I like the handle. I don't use varnish. I apply oil and then wax. This is what it looks like in the rough.

Original Cattaraugus 225Q with a modern remake by Bark River Knives called the Quartermaster.

The Cattaraugus Knife was co-founded by Mr Case in Cattaraugus County NY. He eventually split off and went just across the border into Bradford Pennsylvania and became the Case knife company. Case also owns Zippo lighters and all (as far as I know) their production is done in the Bradford PA plant. They also have a museum there…….. My deer camp is in Cattaraugus Co. that knife is a neat piece of history.

A Randall!

I love my Randall "Airman". It has a 5-1/2" blade:

Beautiful knife! I had one ordered when I was in College. My roommate said; "I'd NEVER pay $60 for a knife, no matter how good looking it is!" The knife never got ordered, and I've kicked myself regularly ever since! Oh well...that's life!

Many years ago, when I only owned one Randall, an older gentleman I met at a gun show told me an interesting tidbit. If you are going to collect Randall knives, stay away from stacked leather handles, they will never look as nice as when they were new. I love the look of a 7" #1 with leather, but have always talked myself out of it.
