Dear Santa Dept. of Smith & Wesson:
I've been good, so reward me and others with a J-framed .38 Special with a 3-inch barrel and adjustable sights.
This would make an excellent defense and kit gun.
The all-steel frame would add necessary weight to tame recoil. Stainless steel would shrug off rust from humidity, sweat and -- in my locale -- desert dust containing salt and alkali.
The .38 Special shotshell is far more effective than the .22 shotshell, for dispatching pests (though I rarely shoot a snake, since even rattlesnakes are beneficial rodent-gobblers).
And make the front sight pinned into place, so it can be blued steel.
I don't see much use for a .357 Magnum in the J-frame; recoil and blast promote flinching.
A version in 9mm would be a good hideout gun for military personnel (and Speer makes 9mm shotshells too!).
Top it off with black or desert tan grips bigger than the Uncle Mike's boot style currently on your J-frames.
Too many people think that the snubnose is inaccurate. It's at its best with adjustable sights, and probably most accurate in .22 and .38 Special. My Model 637 .38 will keep all shots on a 9" paper plate at 25 yards, offhand -- I'm sure I could do better with a little longer barrel and adjustable sights.

In the mid 1980s, a friend owned an S&W 5-shot .38 Special, blued, with adjustable sights and 3" barrel.
Unsure which model it was, but it was a nice gun.
He later sold it, without telling me it was up for sale. Alas.

The stainless M-60-4 WAS approved for plus P and came out about 1990.
