Does it exist and if so which model is it?

I have a 686 just as above (except 357) and am looking for a companion for it. I picked up a new Classic hoping to change out the grips to the older target grips when I found out it had a round butt.

Thank you for any help,

Thomas

Yes, I had a 6" or 6.5" with a full lug and square butt. I think it is called a Classic DX.

It is looking like the classic DX was a round butt. Are you sure about either if yours was square or the designation??

Thank you for your help.

The Classic Hunter is as described. These will typically have an unfluted cylinder. Not common but not rare. Several are usually up for sale at any time on GB.

It was in fact a square butt. I only know because we switched the grips out when I sold it to a close friend. If I don't have pictures I will get them. It had smooth combat grips initially.

Not mine but it will look like this.

OP you are looking for a "Classic Hunter" series which were full lug but with square butt, non fluted and unique 6 inch barrel(also 3" and 8 3/8" versions). (not to be confused with the Classic or Classic DX which were all round butt). You will see these in the -1,-2 and -3 versions with the -3 being the best(endurance package) and most rare ( only 2000 if i remember correct).

There were also blued versions of the "Classic Hunter"

I believe the classic hunters are 629-2 models made in 1989. They were the precursors to the round butt classic line that started with 629-3.

You may want to opt for the round butt later models, by 629-3 all the endurance upgrades had been implemented

Why not a square butt, with a longer barrel, and partial lug,,
That will balance the same as the shorter barrel, with a full lug,,,

And, you get a better sight radius with the longer barrel, if you want to shoot it,,
