Model 629, N629193, manufactured in 1979 and kept in the factory collection until being auctioned by Little John in 1996. Model 66, K949138, manufactured in May 1970 as part of a run to test the tooling for the new stainless .357 Combat Magnum. Kept in the factory collection until being shipped in November 1975 to G. T. Distributors. Single click on the photos for a better look.

I always wondered if any first run or sample early 629's had a stainless rear sight like the model 66 and 67's did. Unless Doc knows otherwise, I suppose this thread rests my curiosity!

I had N629100 in my collection for a time and it had a blue rear sight and rib. The photo of N629156 on the cover of Shooting Times (3/79) shows it with a blue rear sight also.

Since the stainless rear sight, and non-insert front sight went away circa '72 on the SS K's due to complaints, I wouldn't have expected them to try it on the 629.
