I just finished watching a DVD of one of the great "lost" TV series from the golden age of TV--"Steve Canyon" was a TV series that ran on NBC for the 1958-59 season and later re-run on ABC. To the best of my knowledge the show has never been seen on any network or cable outlet since. As a young lad this show made a positive impression on me and influenced my decision to later enlist in the Air Force and stay for a twenty year career.

The Steve Canyon character was a Lt Col in the new USAF (USAF was only 10 years old at the time) and he was a designated troubleshooter going on temporary duty assignments to be involved in all cutting edge projects that were going on during the height of the Cold War. As the series progressed he became the base commander at the fictional Big Thunder AFB in California. The end of each show is dedicated to an Air Force component highlighted in the show such as Flight Test, Pararescue, Air Police, the Thunderbirds etc. Excellent footage of the "century series" fighters of the time-- mainly the F-102 Delta Dagger and the F-100 Super Sabre. Steve also does a lot of work in the B-52 Stratofortress as well--after all, he can fly anything because he's Steve Canyon!

DVD's of the TV show are available from the Milton Caniff estate. Milton Caniff was the creator of "Terry and the Pirates" and Steve Canyon comic strips. He died in 1988 and his estate has gone through a process of restoring the TV show episodes and putting them on DVD.

The shows are crisp and clear on the DVD--and the nice part is as you watch an episode all the original 1958-59 promotions and commercials are included--Chesterfield cigarettes, L&M cigarettes, TV show promos such as "the Restless Gun" and "The Untouchables"

The Air Force provided full technical support--and there are Chesterfield cigarettes commercials filmed with USAF ground Crew and B-52 crew members smoking and endorsing Chesterfield cigarettes. Part of Chesterfield advertising motto of a cigarettes for "Men of America".

Highly recommended entertainment!! link: Steve Canyon On DVD

Loved the show!
BTW-Convair F-106. (Delta Dagger) F-102 (Delta Dart) IIRC?
The 102 had a triangle shaped top of the rudder, the 106 a "flat" top. 106 had an "area ruled" body @ mid fuselage, 102 not so. 106 highly super-sonic, 102 barely.
Did I mention I loved the show?

(EDIT) THANKS! Haven't seen them in 50 years! My X-Mas present has just been selected!
(OK ANOTHER EDIT?) To tell the truth, it's been so long since seeing the show that I can't recall whether it was a 102 or a 106? But I sure as Hell will be able to refresh my memory when I get these!

I remember that series. One episode that sticks in my mind is one showing flashbacks to the Korean War, recall a scene of the F-86s taking off and one of the view through the gunsights of both the F-86s and MiGs.

Try googeling Steve Canion you youngsters i read that comic strip in the paper back in 1948 and i was a kid. Glad to see you also appreciate what us oldsters waiter to read as i recall he was only in the sunday comics

Pikers, all of you.

I had the Steve Canyon helmet, complete with the eye shields that slid down or retracted back into the helmet body.

I used to read the Steve Canyon strip in the local paper faithfully each day, "back in the day."

Canyon did a heck of a job, and I frequently wondered why he never got promoted for it.

I don't think every paper carried the comic daily? Mine (Chicago) did till late 60's.
Where did you find that helmet? I recall the latter episodes where he was wearing the U-2 style altitude suits and helmet.

Didn't he crash land a B58 with nuclear bombs on board? or did he drop them and then crash land? I remember when I couldn't wait to get the evening paper to read the 3 panels to see what was going to happen next.

I recall that plot line too Mr. B!
I just can't recall whether it was in the TV show or the dead tree version? I jones on it, due to the B-58 Hustler being my favorite bomber (and our only supersonic one till the B-1) of that era. Do you recall the huge combo drop tank/electronics pod on the under belly? Oh man! My Wife is gonna' hate this. I'm way too old to start acting 12 again! Of course, how could anyone tell by the way I act here?

Steve Canyon was a young whipper snapper who followed in the footsteps of an earlier set of aviation heroes, The Blackhawks. The Blackhawks were an international group of aviators who appeared starting in the early '40's in comics and movie serials. In later days they flew the snazzy looking Lockheed F-90.

You have them bassackwards. The F102 is the DELTA DAGGER and the F106 is the DELTA DART.
Many years ago [ '81 ?...] I walked into the PILOT'S GRILL in Bangor Maine for a big steak and a double shot of bourbon, not nessessarily in that order. While waiting to be seated I noticed they had their picture of the F102 misnamed as the DELTA PASSER. I told the man there it was mismarked as it was the DELTA DAGGER, and he went absolutely apeshiq !!! I mean to tell you I had a screaming lunatic on my hands and thought I would have to fight my way out of the place. I told him as quietly as I could he'd better shut up or he would be leaving.....
