Stevens Junior

I have never looked closely at one of these until today. There were 4 different models of these boys rifles to choose from and I picked this one because of overall condition. Some youngster made it his by doing some stippling along the edge of the stock next to the butt plate. Maybe he was keeping a running tally of squirrels. I looked in my Sears reprint from 1908 and this one wasn't in there. The Favorite model was listed for $5.40, I figure this one probably went for $1.75 or somewhere near that. A few quick snaps.

It's the simplest design of all the different Stevens rolling block .22 boys' rifles. I once had a Stevens Crack Shot, and it was a lot of fun to shoot, despite having a rusty bore. I found it in an old barn back in the late 1950s. I had plans to restore it which never reached fruition. I ended up selling it for parts.

The Stevens Junior is not listed in my 1914 H,S&B catalog, but the Stevens "Little Scout" is shown as being the lowest priced in the Stevens line at $2.75 (wholesale). Which is probably around $100-120 retail in today's dollars.

I love little single shots! I have a Savage Model 72 (Savage's repro of the Stevens Favorite) that I keep on the wall of my work area. It's my "trainer", the one I take when shooting with newbies.
