Sticky trigger on a new 629?

Anyone ever experience a trigger that didn't return after firing?

I just took my new from the factory 629 .44 with a five inch barrel to the range today.

I was putting some Winchester 240 grain JSP's through the barrel. Sometime during the 3rd or 4th cylinder I fired off a round and the trigger did not return. I'm fairly certain I then brought back the hammer to fire off another round in single action (before I realized the trigger issue), but obviously couldn't because the trigger never reset.

Before I could fiddle with it, the trigger returned to normal and I fired off the rest of the cylinder. The first thing I thought was "Dang, internal lock!" But I don't think the IL had anything to do with it. Anyway I loaded up another cylinder and it happened again. The trigger never returned and I couldn't drop the hammer. Again, a split second later, the trigger returned.

I fired off another two cylinder's worth and then I put 25 rounds of Remington 180 grain JSP's through the barrel. No further problems.

What gives? Not lubricated enough? Recoil related? Could my finger have kept the trigger back? This .44 is the biggest bore hand gun I own and I may have been a little squeamish pulling the trigger. I found myself flinching a couple of times pulling the trigger on a spent casing after cycling through the cylinder.

I would have shot some more but the webbing of my hand by my thumb was raw and bleeding.

I tell ya' what though...just as accurate as my other S&W revolvers. Incredible. Loving that flash.

I'm betting its nothing oil and more shooting won't take care of,if it happens after 100 rounds and a good lube job I'd call smith untill then don't worry about it

Thank you for the replies, everyone.

I can't get it to happen when I dry fire. And it did only happen (twice) during the fist 25 or so rounds that went through the gun. The second 25 rounds went through without a hitch. I'll have to fire it some more later on.

I just cleaned it really good and everything appears fine. Of course, there may be different things happening when a round is fired...but...I'll see.

Dang, I love my wheel guns!

"Several things could cause this.
1. Check the hand
2. loose hammer stud
3. burr on DA/sear
4. trigger return spring not fully seated in the housing
5. mainspring screw not fully seated"

A lot of these things are past my experience level. A visual check doesn't reveal anything obvious. Thanks for the checklist.

Try removing the grips and hold the gun upside down, if the light is right you will be able to see the rebound spring/slide assembly, let a drop or two of oil drop onto/into the assembly. While you have the grips off drip a drop of oil on each side of the hammer while the gun is still upside down.

Make sure the gun is UNLOADED or double check for SNAP CAPS and dry fire a hundred times or so in double action....dry fire whenever you get the chance for a week or so, should take care of your sticky trigger with the bonus of building up your trigger finger and grip.

3. Buy old 629 without infernal lock.

And I prefer to have the high beam dimmer switch on the floor! I don't like the cosmetics of the IL either but its here to stay. Continually blaming the lock for problems like this is becoming mundane especially when the OP seems to like the weapon.

I would suggest a call to S&W since it is a new gun. Its probably something minor but, since you paid a good chunk of money for it, let them fix it or at least tell you where to start. The 629 is a great gun and you will like it once the bug is worked out. Good luck and let us know what you find out.
