Anyone running one of these? I'm looking for a 13" handguard for my 458 Socom build. I really don't want to spend $200+. Been there, done that.

i have one...love it...it's on the lower rifle(not an Smith and Wesson).

they have a proprietary barrel nut that is included with it. they also provide a wrench for that nut. when i received mine, the wrench bent. i called them and had a replacement within a few days. i plan on putting one on the AR that i'm building for my wife.

I'm assuming by the looks of that barrel nut and the inclusion of shims that the nut must be clocked correctly? Did you have any headaches with that?

The AR platform is a modular platform and was designed to have complete interchangeability of parts. For that reason alone I wouldn't even consider anything with a proprietary, non-interchangeable component like the barrel nut in question.

i got it on the 2nd try actually. i didn't need to shim it at all. it torques to between 40 and 65 or 80 ft/lbs if i remember correctly. what i did was before i installed the barrel and the nut, i put the handguard on the upper, then made marks where the mounting holes were so i had an idea of where to put the holes on nut once i had enough torque. doing this, i got it close enough to get 5 of the six bolts in the handguard. i only needed to turn it a little bit more to get the 6th one in.

That would eliminate most of the free float handguard manufacturers out there.

and the megafins is a freefloat handguard...

it being proprietary is no big deal for me. install was easy enough, quality is great, as is with the other strike industries products(9mitems total) that i have on this build. their service was great and i can't fault them for missing a wrench. they were over apologetic for not having that one replaced with the newer, wider one.
