STRIPES!

Watching one of my favorite Bill Murray movies on BBC America right now. Stripes is right up there with Meatballs, Caddyshack, Ghostbusters - all from Bill's golden age of the early 1980's.

Anybody else a fan of his work back in the day?

IT'S GROUNDHOG DAY!
I saw Bill Murray at the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA in 1992. He stayed hid until the ceremony was just about over, then he came out. There was a video made of his appearance and one of the Inner Circle put a top hat on him and Bill Murray actually got to hold Punxsutawney Phil for a while.
The movie was in production at that time, and the story is that Bill Murray went back to Illinois and did a re-write on the movie script based on what he saw from being at the Groundhog Day ceremony. I know for sure that Phil's proclamation read in the movie is identical to the proclamation the Groundhog Club read at the actual ceremony in 1992.
My dad and stepmother also were interviewed on that video. It was their first big date before they got married. The video also included the Groundhog Club dinner from the night before where I received my appointment as an Ambassador of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

I was best man at a wedding where Caddyshack was filmed. Rolling Hills. Another friend worked in the lawn equipment repair shop. Good times.

Stripes, Tank Hill Ft. Jackson S.C. More good times.

Bill Murray is a pretty versatile actor. He was the lead in a remake of "The Razors edge". I was surprised to see him in that particular roll. He did a much better job than Tyrone Power in an earlier version of the same story.

The really ironic thing about Caddyshack is it was never expected to be a commercial success. Other than a few actors who, at the time, had a little name recognition it was a real low-budget production.

IIRC I believe the studio execs thought that at best it would do a little more than break even, and at worst it would be a tax write off.

Instead it became an almost cult-classic. Another prime example of how out of touch Hollyweird can be with what the public really likes and will pay to see.

Bill Murray has very recently and publicly supported the gun control efforts of the Parkland students . . .

Very unfortunate. But it doesn't change the quality of his comedy 30 years ago, and boycotting 30 year old movies on TV over a recent position would of course be pointless.

Thanks for making the point though. Guess I won't be watching much of his new stuff - assuming there is any. FWIW the quality of his comedy started going downhill 20+ years ago anyway (after Groundhog Day).

No big loss not to see his newer stuff IMO.
