Sturdy Safe

Anyone have a Sturdy Safe, the brand, not a big/heavy safe? They look well built, 7 gauge steel, not the 12 gauge steel used in most other safes.

There is a difference.

I have three Sturdy brand safes.

They build them about an hour from where I live. I've been to the facility where they build them a couple of times.

I bought my first one about twenty-five years ago. It has been a good safe, but I don't think we ever know how good a safe is until someone tries to break into it.

I researched safes to the point of overkill. I looked at them all and read all of the forums. My takeaway from it all was that a determined person with knowledge will get into your safe and a smash and grab thief generally won't. Talking to friends who work burglary details tell me that the only gun safes they generally find that have been defeated are ones that were removed from the residence and opened elsewhere.

When I was shopping, I was particularly unimpressed with the Liberty brand. I didn't find much value in their lifetime warranty considering it doesn't do anything that my homeowner's policy doesn't. There has been a beaten-on safe in the three Liberty dealers I've visited. I asked employees at each dealer if these were burglary attempts. Two dealers said they were, one dealer told me that the beaten safes come from meetings where dealers all take turns at whacking them with a sledgehammer.

Based on my experience, Sturdy safes (RSC's) are well-built, functional, and reliable units. They are not pretty. There is no plush carpeting, gloss paint, or lights. Think of evidence locker finish when you think of Sturdy. I chose Sturdy over other RSC's because I thought there was more metal for the money. I think that that manufacturers that fold doors to make the steel in the door appear thicker are misleading potential customers. I'm safe shopping again and noticed on Sturdy's website that they are now offering 4 gauge bodies and 3/8" doors.

My two cents, my next safe will be a Graffunder. If I were choosing between the RSC's that I've looked at, I'd probably go with another Sturdy or an Amsec BF.
