Anyone had good luck with shooting subsonic ammo in your 15-22? I'm looking for something for upcoming squirrel season that will not make a lot of noise yet still operate reliably. I want a round that will cycle the action and provide consistent accuracy.

Any brand recommendations before I just blindly buy 100rds of each and every SS round I can find at Wal-Mart?:D

i went jack rabbit hunting out here in the Sunkist citrus groves here in AZ (they jacks chew the drip lines on the irrigation systems and they are constantly replacing them) yesterday.

was using the 15-22 with an AAC Pilot II can and Remington yellow/green box sub sonics. all you hear is the action. i had gone earlier in the morning and verified my 50 yard zero with the EXPS-0 Eotech with 3xmag and all rounds within 2 inches so that is minute of jack rabbit to me.

Hit the groves and took 2, only because it was getting hotter than Hades and didn't want to get too far from the truck.

when using the SS rounds, i only shoot to about 50 yards since they sometimes will not kill the intended animal. I had one a while back that must not of had enough powder loaded in it and it actually bounced off a jack like he had body armor on!

Keep those tree rats (wish we had them in my area) at that or below range and you should be good. they are louder w/o a suppressor but much more quiet than say a stinger.

you should be knocking them out of the trees with the SS round, no problem.

Thanks, roadkill45! 25yards should roughly be my longest shot - iron sights, limbs, and the whole cosine angle thing coming into play.

I WISH I had a suppressor! At the moment it seems I'm concerned with not wasting any more money on testing SS rounds than is necessary! Cost of a suppressor and appropriate paperwork would be out of the question at present date. But would be really awesome, none the less!

Personally, I only use the CCI subs or standard. I have had poor luck with the Remington. The CCI are VERY consistent and cycling has never been a problem.

Subsonic or Standard....the quiets will not cycle the gun. The quiets are wicked quiet in a bolt .22 with a suppressor...scary quiet. I shot some quiets out of my 17-2 this weekend...still need ear protection. I have read of some guys putting lighter springs on guns and making a 'dedicated' CCI quiet gun, but I'll just shoot them from a bolt gun for now.

The Subsonic and usually the Standard will not have the 'sonic crack' that high power cartridges have either. The M&P 15/22 produces a lot of 'bolt noise' too when the action cycles. If quiet is where you want to go, you might want to consider a bolt rifle with the subs or quiets.

Yea... I just hadn't shot CCI/SS... I shoot quiets in my back yard all the time..
Thanks Rick

ive read a lot of good things about these both with and without a suppressor. sorry i dont have any personal experience with them.

I use CCI SV for suppressed shooting with my 15-22 and Sig522 SWAT. I buy it at Dick's Sporting Goods for $25/500 which is as about as good a price as you'll find it, and you'll find it considerably more expensive elsewhere. Over the past two years I have yet to hear a single round go supersonic from either the 15-22 or Sig. For suppressed plinking there's nothing better for the price, IMO.

pretty much what ive read. if i ever do get a suppressor, thats what i plan on buying.

Gemtech SS

A while back my favorite LGS (which leans heavily towards class III stuff) started stocking Gemtech branded subsonic 22LR ammo.
I bought one box just to see how it worked and was pleasantly surprised. It runs through my 15-22 flawlessly, with or without a can and is still pretty quiet without suppression... quiet enough that I no longer take the time to thread the can on the rifle when the occasional raccoon gets the ducks in a tizzy at 3am... I just slide the bedroom window open and.. well... you know.

I did some daytime testing when I knew my closest neighbor was hanging out on his deck (about 120 yards away). 25 rounds of the Gemtech SS, unsupressed, then I strolled over for a chat and casually asked if he heard "the fireworks" and he replied "Nope.. didn't hear anything here"

CCI Standard Velocity. They are very consistent and reliable.

REM Subs are loud, dirty and inconsistent.

If anyone wonders about the difference I recommend loading a mag alternating these rounds. The Rem is much louder because the case does not seal in the chamber and gas flows around the case.

Rem sub sonics didn't do well in my rifle either. They either failed to cycle or they went supersonic. Worthless either way.

I shoot Winchester subsonic HP's out of mine, chrono'd at 1025 and cycled the action every time. With mini mags zero'd at 50, the Win SS shot POA/POI at 25 without touching the scope and they have the deepest HP I've seen on a 22lr. The Win ss also held quarter size groups at 25
