Its that time of year again. I'm fixing to roll on over to New Mexico, northern part up to Raton (just south of the Colorado line) for a full week of competition at the NRA Whittington Center. I literally have 1,000's of rounds of ammo as ballast right now. I will have a bunch less on the return trip, but hope to offset the weight with a new-to-me gun or two.

Plan is to roll early in the AM and have a nice easy drive to Holbrook, AZ, then I'll finish out my run on Saturday. Almost can't wait to get to the Dysart exit in Avondale (my closest Whatabuger, all the Tejanos displaced Tejanos know what I'm talking about) for lunch. Sure glad gas is about a buck and a half less than last year, leaves more money for guns.

I should be able to check in regularly as I'll be bringing my computer. All I know is I am really ready to hit the road, have used a single day of leave yet this year and I'm really looking forward to not going into the office for a while. If any of y'all happen to be there at the Whittington Center, swing by the PPC range and look for me under the blue & white tent at teh west end of the range inbetween relays.

Thanks for the recommendation on eats Erich. I'll talk with the MIssus about that in the morning. I know the general area but I can't specifically recall that restaurant. How is the parking situation and is it a safe enough spot to leave the Burb loaded with guns and ammo? Normally, when on the road to pistol matches, I'll only eat when and where I can keep an eye on the truck.

I may just stash this restuarant in the file for a couple months as I'll be back in ABQ for two weeks in September. You'll have to come out to the Shooting Park then.

Wuluf,

In-n-Out isn't bad, I like them but I love my Whataburger. At least In-n-Out knows to use mustard and no ketchup, they'd be way better if they used jalapenos too. Then it'd be a tough choice.

Though there's parking behind Mary and Tito's, you can park the truck right out in front or right alongside the restaurant.

Very good, that makes me feel a little better being able to keep an eye on the truck. If I get on the road early enough we might even beat the lunch rush. Even though I just finished a late dinner about an hour ago, reading the reviews kinda made me hungry again.

Mary & Tito's

Erich,

We rolled into town, ended getting in a little after 12 noon compliments of an accident just west of the river (blocked all but the inside lane). Pretty good eats and it was the first time I have ever seen/heard of stuffed sopapillas. The wife and one daughter ordered them and they were tasty. M&T has some pretty good green chile too, the kind with the stealth bite ;).

Would that have been Mary at the cashier counter, older lady, blind in one eye and poor vision in the other? Very trusting too as she asked me what the checked totaled to. Nice folks and good eats, thanks for the suggestion.

I'll eat there again in September.

Hey, that's great that you got to try it out and got to meet Mary (that was her!).

Mary's husband Tito used to own Tito's Tavern across the street. A bar. She'd bring in her carne adovada to feed to the drunks, and it was well regarded. She and Tito then opened up Mary & Tito's Cafe across the street so the sober folk could try out the carne.

Mary goes around from table to table asking how things are. She has a politician's way about her in her old age, always greeting folks with, "So nice to see you!," which conveys warmth to friends and strangers alike.

I'm glad you folks got to try it out, and I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed it. :)
